My boyfriend and I went to Hofmeitser jewlers on thursday to look at diamonds and settings. I had already had my mind set on buying online, but I hadn''t seen any diamonds on my finger so I needed to compare. She tried really hard to sell us a 1.23c I SI2 ags certed and cut graded a 4. She showed us the cut grading adn everything but the "Bottom" scored a 0. I can''t remember the name of what it was but she said that the only thing that didn''t score a 0 was the bottom of the diamond. It was eyeclean, there was a small grouping of inclusions at about 6 oclock that my bf looked at with a 10x microscope, adn after she looked at the diamond at the same ange adn said that he could see them with the naked eye, but i couldn''t and did not look at it under the microscope. Now to the cost, it was $6500. Is that reasonable, I''ve done a lot of searches and it seems to be too much. It was 6.8mm and I really like the look of at least 7mm but 7.2mm or above is better. Our budget is under $7000. Can anyone find any better???

Hi Abby,

While us vendors can not recommend stones or solicit here publicly I will comment on the stone you were looking at. If the diamond was a "0" all the way down but the "bottom side" of the diamond caused it to be an AGS cut grade of "4" that is cause for concern as the pavilion angles on a diamond can greatly influence the look (brilliace/fire) of the diamond.

A 1.23ct diamond should have a diameter in the neighborhood of just under 7mm (around 6.95mm or so) so the 6.8mm diameter on the diamond you were looking at points to evidence of a pavilion that is too deep (45.4-46.8% constitutes the pavilion depth of an AGS 4). If you give us the angles we can give you an idea of what the light leakage/return would be in the stone.

Peace

This diamond is a comparable for you to consider. 1.264 ct, I, VS1, 1.4 with Ex/Ex/Ex/Vg on the HCA for $6648 (Price Scope price).

I'm sorry to ask you to look for stones, it was not to have you solicite or otherwise, just to see if that was comperable or not. I don't know what the exact measurments were, I didn't look very closely. As we were sitting there it had a lot of sparkle and fire, but we were under halogen lights that were very bright, she had us go to another part of the store with it and it didn't seem to sparkle as much, maybe just differences in lighting that are normal or the lights made everything sparkle.

Thanks for the comparison...I think that if we are going to pay that much, it should be an "excelent" or ideal cut. I was hoping to get something a little larger, but I'm not sure if that is possible in our budget, but cut is the most important! Thanks!

Jewelry store halogen lights make most all diamonds sparkle like crazy. A more true test is to view the diamond is all types of natural lighting, including candlelight. If it still sparkles then, you probably have a winner! Just don't fall for the sparkles under the special bright lights....

No problem, Abby. I did a quick search and saw that one was close in carat weight and color grade to what you saw in person.

From your description, it's not an apples to apples comparison based on cut. But, you can get that size in a Super Duper Louper in your budget.

Along these same lines, the diamond we saw was an I color, and looked white to us. We had no problem with the color, would a K color be too yellow in a white setting. There is a diamond from gog that is a 1.37 VS2 K color adn I like the look from what I see online, but I was told it may look too yellow with a white setting, what do you all think???

Hi Abby,

A "K" color super ideal will face up approx. 1-2 color grades whiter which is why we'll purchase K colors for stock as long as their cuts are like what you see that we feature. The primary difference is when you'd put it on it's side. From the side or profile view you'll be able to see a hint of color but face up our K's will outshine 99% of the stuff out there. We also back it with a full 30 day refund should it be too tinted for ya.

Best bet when looking and comparing is to be able to compare these kind of stones side by side. If you're anywhere close to an Hearts on Fire distributor it would be good to compare one of those stones side by side with a regular cut stone like what you were shown so you can see the difference for yourself.

PQ.. that is a neat quote from John Lennon. My daughter is getting into the Beatles too (I'm an ol fan myself) and we've been watching the Anthology on DVD. Excellent set of DVD's.

Peace,

Abby,

Is this the bastard you are talking about? Every posting by shoppers going for any higher color around here made me think about that stone and it's tremendous optics. You should surely see a K-color before deciding wether it is "white" enough for your or not, but chances are it will. Surely it is for me, but I may not be the best reference for this: I like them as "tinted" as they get. So... I am glad to hear about anyone trying those out.

Yes, that is the "bastard" that we are looking at! So rhino, let me see if I understand what you are saying...your K because of the super ideal cut, will look one to two shades whiter than a K of a lesser cut. Hofmeister, the jewlery store that we looked at, were a hearts on fire retailer. Is the 1.37 VS2 K is a hearts on fire? So your stone will have a similar color to the lesser cut I, or have be tinted as much as the I? I'm really just trying to understand. I just spoke with someone from usacerted and they said that flourescence faint or medium is ok and it will make an I or lower look closer to a F? Is that true, or is it just a matter of opinion?

Rhino..you still there??? If you can either confirm or deny the above, I'd REALLY appreciate it!!! Whenever you get a minute!
