Diamond Diagnostics

This is a follow up to my previous post titled "Diamond Stud Colour", in which I was asking for advice on diamonds that were proposed to me by my jeweller for my first pair of studs. I really appreciate all the insight I received on that thread and the conclusion was that I should keep looking, as those diamonds did not quite meet the recommended parameters. I am hoping for more help and insight please on my quest for studs! I had been planning on sending my jeweller the recommended parameters and asking them to look within those but then something confusing happened. I have since tried on a pair of 2ctw studs and looked up those diamonds. I saw that they also didn't quite meet the parameters but when I put them through the HCA the results were great. This has really confused me!

Can someone please explain why these two diamonds are rated so highly, even though the table is above the recommended % and the crown angle is below the recommendation as well? Thank you so much.

Those diamonds are what are referred to as 60/60 diamonds meaning the table and depth are both close to 60. The first diamond only gets a very good rating and the second diamond does better at excellent. These diamonds generally favor brightness more than their ideal cut counterparts that can favor fire. A different flavor of diamond cut if you will.

Oh that’s so interesting. Do the 60/60 diamonds have any disadvantages? Would you recommend them? So I’m guessing ideal cut is diamonds that fit within the recommended parameters, right? Sorry, I’m still learning

Ditto @MissGotRocks . These types of stones do work well for earrings because they tend to be brighter (vs fire) and larger due to
being on the shallow side of the depth range.

The disadvantage is less fire which doesn't matter so much for earrings because the sun/light is pretty much blocked by ears, hair,
head, etc but if you're wearing it as a ring you would probably want to see the fire.

Also, the hca is a rejection tool, not a selection tool. So these weren't rated "highly", they simply "passed" on the HCA.

Oh I did not realize that about the HCA.. I guess I should go back to the original plan of asking the jeweler for an ideal cut.

60/60 can work just fine for a ring, but the drawback is most 60/60s that have been posted by inquiring minds aren't cut and proportioned very well. ASET/IS needs to be spot-on perfect to get one that has great optics, in my opinion.
