Diamond Dealer about to purchase an oval 2ct diamond for us. Please let me know if it's a good one?!

Hello!

A dealer has recommended this 2.01ct oval diamond to be used for my future engagement ring. (eep!!!)
We've been hoping for a nice 2-2. something oval and it's at the max of what we're wanting to spend so I'm just checking in with you kind experts and enthusiasts to make sure we're getting a good deal for the money before we bite the bullet. I think the dealer has it on reserve.

Would you mind letting me know your thoughts on whether it's a good one or not?

I'll give it a 95 out of 100. Its pretty nice. It has a wide area of nice facets through the
center that will have nice light return. However, it doesnt have any additional nice
facets show up in the red area as the stone turns (hence the -5). However, it is very
difficult to find facets that light up in the red area unless you go with a lower ratio stone
(more short and fat). It is a trade-off that most people are willing to accept.

Its a pretty nice looking SI2. Ovals hide inclusions fairly well. The feather on the edge is the
grade-making inclusion. It is typical to have only "Very Good" symmetry on ovals so I dont
hold that against it. Personally, I like the look and as long as you're good with the SI2 its a
nice choice IMO.


This shows the relative size of the stone on a size 6 finger (the finger on the screen.
(the finger and stone are bigger than real life so it wont look this big in real life). It will look big though!

One concern I have is how long and thin the oval looks.

The dealer said this is better for ovals but I've traditionally been attracted to the chubby round ovals.

Is it a skinnier than normal oval or is it just my untrained eye?

Will the diamond face up bigger than it's 2.01 carats because of the length?

My finger is a size 4 1/4 or an H for reference by the way

@PattsyStone I'm not an oval expert but it seems like ovals are similar to emerald cuts. The length/ width ratio is a personal preference. I selected a shorter, wider ec for my er because that's what I like. I think you should get the ratio that you find the most pleasing. And your ring size is tiny so any stone is going to look big!

Like @lulu_ma said, it is a personal preference. This stone does fall on the longer side
though with a 1.56 ratio. It would be great for my size 6 3/4 fingers! If you want one that
is fatter you need to tell your vendor. Fatter, but with length, would fall into the 1.4-1.5
range. Short and fat would probably be anywhere under that.

IMO, the closer you get to a round stone, you usually find better facets with better light
return but all stones need to be evaluated on their own merits.

You do need to take your lifestyle into account. Shocked that I'm asking this but is
a 2 carat stone with a bigger ratio too big for your everyday life? Consider where
you live and what friends and family might be wearing. Put it in perspective though.
You still should get what you want! Almost all 2 carat stones are going to look big
on a size 4 1/2 finger, however, ovals can really look large due to their length.
That's usually a good thing but in some cases it might not be or you may want to drop
down in size some to get something a little more wearable? Just something to consider.
Its certainly personal preference.

We do have a few oval threads but a lot of time they just have the carat weight
(and not the LxW) and also dont always have the finger size.

I looking for ideas to reset my grandmother's oval diamond. It's approximately 1 carat (no papers- she bought the diamond in the 70s). I've got some ideas on settings I like (below), but I would love to see other PS favorites. I am totally open to style...

So I know this sounds crazy (but we are a little cray cray here on PS)...some PSers get a
feel for size by cutting out the exact measurement of a stone and taping it on their
finger. Worth a try to see what size you may be comfortable with. Of course its a lot
different than a 3-d stone but it does help some people.

Are you or your diamond dealer going to be inspecting this stone in-person prior to setting?

Based on the video it looks like there is at least one, possibly several surface-breaching feathers at the girdle. This, unless the video is lying, would be a dealbreaker. But videos do sometimes lie.

BN has a generous and free return policy in the US... I don’t know how taxes etc. work in Australia...

Thank you tyty333. Today I actually moulded a to-scale mock-up stone out of tack and stuck it on a band and wore it, so I guess I'm pretty crazy myself and must be in the right place!

Oh no yssie! Arrrgh. The dealer didn't mention these feathers being an issue but he will indeed inspect the stone beforehand. I think the idea was to cover the main feather with a prong but is it more than just a cosmetic concern? I've just done some searches and it looks like feathers breaching surfaces can make the diamond more likely to chip sometimes? Is this correct?

If anyone can recommend better ovals around 2ct priced @ approx $20,000 then I am all ears.

Actually- I'll make a new thread asking (hopefully that's allowed) so I can attract more diamond hunters. I can't seem to change the title of this one.
