Everything being equal regarding clarity, cut, and color, etc. You have a 1 carat diamond, round, oval, emerald, princess, oval, pear, heart, etc.

Is one shape of diamond more desirable or more costly based on the above and why?

Yes, the round diamond is more expensive than fancies shapes because

1) the market demand is highest for a round diamond (it's the classic shape); and

2) round diamonds include top makes, which tend to be more expensive as well.

Is that true for radiants of really good cut? Dunno - never look at them.

A well cut round brilliant will cost more than all other shapes except for a well cut marquise because the diamond rough used to cut a round brilliant costs more from DeBeers than the diamond rough used to produce other shapes. The marquise brilliant generally costs more because more diamond rough is lost in the cutting process in order to properly shape the tips of the stone. It is important to realize that we are making this statement with the understanding that you are looking at well cut stones, a poorly cut round brilliant could certainly cost less than a well cut Radiant or other fancy shape stone...
