Hi - I''m shopping with my fiancé for my e-ring and I tend to like the two-tone setting (platinum and 18K yellow gold) so I wanted to see what people''s opinions are regarding stone color and setting color. I seem to find conflicting information when I try to do research online.

For a G-H-I-J color stone, do you think it''s true that if you to set it in platinum prongs the color of the metal makes the stone look more white? Or does the white metal just make the color in the stone more noticeable?

Or, is it better to set a near colorless stone in yellow gold prongs so the yellow color of the stone is not as noticeable, and the stone ends up looking more white than if it were in a platinum setting?

Thoughts?

Thanks :)

All I can tell you is my experience. We have an "H" and it''s set in platinum. The diamond still looks colorless. In fact, the appraiser thought it was an "F", with the proviso that the diamond would reflect the color of the platinum and therefore look whiter.

The experts will weigh in, I''m sure.

Since the diamond will reflect the metal color, I would set the stone in white prongs.

I think for a very well cut round even through K, platinum is fine. I have a fairly large J in a fancy cut and it shows color a LOT and I feel more comfortable putting it in unplated white gold. Plat does tend to make MY fancy cut look pretty yellow but yellow gold makes it look *very* yellow. By putting it in the white gold it looks best. Again though, for a round I wouldn''t worry about it - they face up very white when well cut. If you want to hide side color, put it in a settng with a lot of metal around the pavillion. Even then G and H shouldn''t show much if any color from the side either I don''t think. Everyone''s different in sensitivity.

your color range is quite large! there is a big difference between ''g'' and ''j''. anyway...it''s more of a personal preference. there is an entire thread about ''j'' color stones in platinum. obviously there are many that are quite content with how their ''near colorless'' diamond looks in something other than yellow gold. if you have a well cut round ''j'' or higher, you would be fine setting it in platinum or wg. lower colors, poorer cuts (which show more color) and fancy shapes would benefit from a yellow gold setting that would ''blend'' with the color in the diamond.
