There are two programs made by octonus software that are used to analyze diamonds (I assume), but the demo is pretty useless and I certainly am not going to pay almost $300 just to play around with it.

Your thoughts on the programs?

Use it hundreds of times a day.
AGS use it to generate all their ASET images as part of theri research (past and present) for their new cut grading systems - they make charts of images first - then use their own software to do the actual grading

Garry, has anyone tried to use DiamCalc to read the proportions of step cut diamonds from pictures ? Any other fancy cuts ?

THIS is what I am talking about ...

The link didn''t work. Can you try again?

Sure ... here it is

In case this still doesn't work, it should lead to the latest newsletter on ideal-scope.com, the one called 'DiamCalc - Estimating proportions".

You mena this Ana http://www.ideal-scope.com/Using%20DC_files/frame.htm

Yes, I have, but it takes a lot of time - minimum 10 minutes and up to 20 to get an accurate match.
But then you cant get the info ordinarily from any scan anyway.

BTW as a vendor for DC (on ideal-scope) it is my experiance that you pay the extra $40 plus shipping for the hasp key version that you can load onto any computer, and when you get a new computer - you just move it over rather than mess around with stuff i can not do and most others cant either.

I had a little experiment - trying to use the GA to interpret random diamond and gemstone pictures not intended for interpretation with cut quality in mind. Pictures of EC from Ebay and a couple of step cut sapphires ended up into the GA for "reading". Well... I do not know if this kind of use was intended, but it does work. Matching the facet arrangement effectively wipes out from the interpretation light source tweaking and color correction used to hide optical defficiences.

Anyway, I have no practical use for this. It was fun trying to see how much information can be extracted from the usual more or less sloppy and doctored photos or gems and diamonds on offer. Insofar, I am quite impressed how well this works.

Garry,

Well done.

Thx Sergey,
We are thinking of doing the same for ASET images after a DiamCalc version comes out with that system.
