Diamond Appraisal....

I have a question regarding the appraisal I received with my engagement ring.
First of all, I want to say that I absolutely love my ring and I know that is all that really matters. I am interested in gathering the correct information to make sure that my fiance received a fair price for what he purchased.
The appraisal states that the diamond was "graded in our accredited Gemological Labratory using the GIA system". Within the actual description of the diamond it says "see EGL diamond certificate #22........" I have done some reading and found that this is EGL isreal and the reputation is not the best.
My question is: Has my jeweler graded this diamond using the GIA system and I can take that as reputable. Or, has this grading come from EGL and the diamond may not be worth what was paid? I am not even sure if my question can be answered?
If more information is needed just let me know.
Thanks in advance for all of your help.

If you received the appraisal from the same person who sold you the ring then you should definitely take it to an independent appraiser.

It's not a second opinion if it comes from the same source as the first. That said, the person who signed the appraisal should be able to explain to you what their report means and how they came to their conclusions. Call 'em up and ask.

You said that you really love the ring, so I think you should consider how you will feel if the appraisal comes back stating that the color and clarity is off by several grades. Will you want to trade your stone for an accurately graded one? Will you keep it because of the sentiment in which it was given to you? Typically to insure the ring you will need an appraisal anyway. The ones that generally accompany the purchase and was preformed by the jeweler selling the diamond is typically inflated and it doesn't make sense to pay premiums for a policy that has an over inflated value. Personally I would want an accurate evaluation of my diamond, but I think that you need to prepare yourself for the eventuality that the appraisal and the EGL report are not going to be consistent, and what if anything you will want to do about that. The good news is that diamonds are assigned a value based on what a dealer feels it's 'true' grade is instead of based on what the report says it is. EGL stones typically sell for less because the industry knows very well about the practices of EGL and it's soft grading. Hopefully your fiance worked with an honest jeweler who also reflected this in the price of the stone.

You can't unsee things. I had a diamond band that I got a nice deal on and was very happy with. I thought it was bright and sparkly and very lovely. Then I got my ASET and saw the diamonds under it and realized all the stones are uniformly over deep. I sold the band. I couldn't go back.

I would advise you to think carefully before you get it appraised.

Ditto Christina and Gypsy.

I'm all for getting as much info as possible - before the purchase. In this case, though, when you love your ring and there is a real risk that an appraisal that might yield information you'd just be happier not knowing, there is merit to staying blissfully ignorant!

Do you have sufficient info to insure the ring with? That might make the choice.
