Most of you probably already know I recently purchased a stone from Good Old Gold. I paid in bank wire, and finally found the PERFECT setting at another local jeweler, that I know my GF is going to love. The stone is now at GOG (they are on vacation). I can go Thurs. and have it set. But I was curious, should I pick up the diamond before Thurs and bring it to a local shop to have appraised or can I wait till its set? Also is an appraisal completely neccessary since I will be getting a bunch of appraisal information with the stone from Good Old Gold? Thanks for everyones help. And be sure pics will be coming soon.

Thanks again.

I''ll be honest. I trust Jonathan as much as an appraiser. I''m sure he knows more about diamonds than the typical appraiser in my area! We know the pricing because we have access to prices online. We are buying certified stones. So contrary to the opinion often given here, no, I see no reason to have a separate appraisal done on a stone from GOG. Jonathan will include one that will be more than adequate for insurance.

An appraiser is essential when buying from sources when you''re not 100% sure of their reputation, when buying a stone second hand, when buying a non-GIA/AGS certified stone, when getting insurance on inherited jewelry, etc.

Oh, and if you can get the description of the setting you''re buying, Jonathan may be able to include that in the appraisal as well.

Thank you for the quick reply! I appreciate your help. By the way here is the stone I purchased. I saw it in the store and its amazing. White as can be and sparkles like crazy! Let me know what you guys think!

You did great!!! That is the perfect kind of SI1 to buy..inclusions on the sides where they won''t be seen! Looks like a very pretty stone! Did you go last Thursday night before they went on vacation? I was thinking you or someone had an appointment then.

Okay, now I''m curious about the setting..any pictures of it online anywhere?

I did go the Thurs before they went on Vacation, I did have an appt. to look at settings. And while I was there I upgraded my original stone I put on hold 2 weeks earlier 1.06 size to this 1.26 size :) I didnt really find a good setting in the store at GOG, so I looked at another local place and found it. It looks alot like the tiffany replica setting with the channel stones. It is .75 carats on the sides in channel diamonds. I will get you a pic asap. My GF is here right now (she has no idea)

Im just happy about the stone. Its so friggin nice, shes gonna pass out when I give it to her!

I love it that you upgraded to the 1.26! That would be a size that she could really love forever! Seriously!!! The setting sounds great! I''m looking forward to the pictures!

In my opinion, if you know and trust the jeweler involved then let him do the appraisal. He actually knows what it will cost to do the replaicement and has all of the information about the diamond, and usually will do the appraisal at no extra charge.

If you need to confirm that the jeweler is indeed giving you what you paid for, then by all means find a GOOD appraiser. (In another thread I read earlier today someone was talking about an appraiser stating that she would place the stone nearer to VS2 than VS1. The stone had a GIA cert stating the diamond to be VS1. While I acknowledge that there are "lucky" certs, I do not like the terminology "nearer to VS2". Is it a VS2, or is it a borderline VS2/VS1. For insurance purposes the stone is a VS1 as far as the client is concerned and as far as the insurance is concerned. If it is in fact a VS2 then the appraiser should state that in her opinion it is a VS2 and let the client decide whether to return the stone to GIA for a recheck. end of rant, sorry)

With Rhino I think you can depend on the fact that he is delivering what he says he is delivering so if you want to accept his appraisal and all of the information that he has on that stone you will probably have a better document than you will get from the average appraiser. (Just don''t get him started on painting...(joke) ).

Wink

Haha! Wink, you''re another one where the outside appraisal wouldn''t be necessary.

Thank you. I dont think I will get it appraised. I trust Johnathan, and think the appraisal info I get with the stone will be sufficient. Im going to bring the setting in next week to have it set. Cant wait. Now I just have to figure out how i'm gonna ask her

One more quick question. Does my diamond give me a gemex report? I could have sworn I saw one on the good old gold page for my stone. But now I dont know where it went. The link to my stone is above.

thanks.

I also bought a diamond from GOG and the Gemex brillancescope was emailed to me. So perhaps it was emailed to you and not posted on the site? That''s the case with mine.

She will love it.
Only downside I see to it is that it isn''t as tight as some dimension wise but a lot worse is sold here every day to people that love em when they get em.

What do you mean the dimensions arent tight? What is wrong with it?? Its not that good? Please someone let me know what dimensions on this stone are bad. Should I keep it?

Thanks.

Your stone falls within both AGS0 and GIA Excellent parameters. It is a beautiful stone! Storm is looking at minute details that most people on here don''t. It really doesn''t matter if your stone is in the top 2% of all stones or the top 3% does it? That''s probably the level of difference we''re talking about. You are more fortunate that most of us in that you were able to see the stone in person. It is beautiful, it has an excellent cut, and that is what matters. I promise we''d tell you if there was something wrong. You can see that done on this forum all the time. But not here because your diamond is fine! Don''t worry!

This to me illustrates the value of "peace of mind" given by an independent appraisal.

One moment you're saying that you trust Jonathan and that you're not going to get an independent appraisal.

The next moment someone makes a very, very slightly negative comment about the stone and then you're wondering if you should keep it.

Where did all the trust go?

I may be biased, but I personally feel there is no better time to have a diamond independently appraised than at point-of-purchase, no matter who the selling vendor is. Then you have somebody employed by you that will either give you total peace-of-mind about the stone (well worth the money spent) or raise some questions that might influence your buying decision (definitely worth the money spent).

Yes...a gemex is provided for you...it will also come back on the link for the diamond. The server that GEMEX uses to host their Live Reports has been down for about a day or so, and it is still down. As soon as the server comes back up, the GEMEX tab will re-appear on the webpage for your diamond.

The Gemex server is now "back in business".

They got it "fixed" about an hour ago.
