So I finally bought a ring, except that after I brought it home, it doesn''t sparkle and look rather "clear". I put in my numbers in the HSA and it has excellent in all 4 categories.

My home is using a warm colour CFL, would that affect its look? What is the optimal lighting to make the diamond sparkle like fire?

Have you cleaned it? How about sunlight?

Hello elty!

More than anything, it takes practice...practice...practice...

And, "macro mode". My camera does a great job with macro mode as long as I don''t also zoom in. I just go macro and get really, really close. Give the camera time to focus and click.

How about you post a picture and we''ll start with what you''ve got.

I''d definitely try cleaning your ring!!! I use the $5 ammonia based drug store cleaner and a small soft toothbrush almost daily.

OK so I need to edit myself:

I thought the "diamond and lighting" question referred to photgographing a stone!

DUH!

Sorry about that!

I agree with making sure it''s perfectly clean first.

I find either direct sunlight, or halogen downlighting makes diamonds sparkle most.

Different lighting gets different results. Home lighting usually isn't the most flattering. Spot/track lighting is great (bars/restuarants), underneath a shade tree, some high set fluorescent lighting in stores such as Home Depot and grocery stores will really make them pop. You just need to take it out on field trips to get a good overview.

Also, if you do a search on here for things like "best diamond lighting" and the like, you should get several good threads that talk about this.
