I wouldn't use a diamond tester for anything other than separating diamonds from CZ.
Certainly wouldn't rely on one for coloured stones. For a start even if it gives a decent reading it won't distinguish between natural and synthetic. So much depends on the condition of the stone as well as to whether you will get an accurate response.
I'm a qualified gemmologist, during my studies we spent 30 minutes playing with diamond/gemstone testers and that was it. None of us bought one to add to our equipment. I can see it being of use if you are buying a lot of second-hand jewellery and want to check melee out quickly but otherwise I think they are potentially problematic if you don't have the equipment and knowledge to double check the results.
