Hi! I am a complete newbie and wanted your opinions on a diamond I have already purchased. It's a GIA Triple excellent. I just found the hca calculator and after I plugged in the numbers it came back as 3.8!! I thought buying a GIA certified diamond was good enough but I am now learning that there are many other things to consider if I truely want a really diamond. Could you please take a look at the numbers for me and let me know your opinions on the diamond.

GIA
round brilliant
1.7 carat
Measurements 7.58 x 7.62 x 4.74
Color F
Clarity SI1 (eye clean)
Cut excellent

Table 58%
Depth 62.4 %
Crown 36.5 degrees
15.5%
Pavilion 40.8 degrees

ST 50%
LH 75%

Polish/symmetry excellent
Flourescence none.

Thank-you sooo much!

Is it in your possession, or just purchased?

The crown angle is whats letting it down. Its a bit steep and will impact the light performance a bit. How much will depend on other factors. Can you request any images? IS/ASET?

Steep crown, not coupled with the correct pavilion angle to balance it.

Can you return it?

Exchange it?

If you can I can give you guidelines for your next stone.

Thank-you for your responses. I really appreciate the time you took to reply. Unfortunately I cannot return or exchange the stone. I feel like such an idiot now. I never thought to do more research because I always thought that if it was certified by AGS or GIA then I didn't have anything to worry about, boy was I wrong. I saw the stone in person and it was really sparkly, I didn't think to ask to see the store outside in a different light because jewellery store lighting can make diamonds look really good. I didn't even know that I could ask for more images of the stone showing how light disperses through it. Do you think the stone will look dark when not under jewellery store lighting? With the steep crown angle will it sparkle less? The stone is currently being set so I haven't seen it since I bought it. I'm really anxious that I made a huge mistake. :wall:
Thank-you

Are you sure you cannot exchange? Where did you buy the stone?

It seems like they would allow you to exchange. It's not a disaster by any means. It is just that the GIA excellent category is way too broad so we prefer to recommend the ones that really are excellent. This one scores very good for light return and fire and good for scintillation (sparkle, flashes of light). We recommend all three of those to be excellent. I would try to exchange if not return. Really, it is never wise to buy any diamond without an unconditional return policy.
