I have recently purchased a princess cut diamond and I am having a ring made. I would like opinions whether (1) the ring was a reasonable deal and (2) whether it is normal to ship the diamond for setting by the setting manufacturer (eg. is this safe? industry standard?)

The diamond is a 1.57 Princess, E, VVS2, good/vg, no flourencence thin to slightly thick girdle, 70-table, 72-depth w/ a GIA certificate. I paid 10k. I have three weeks left on the return policy.

I have also ordered a platinum D''Vatche setting. D''Vatche wants me to ship the diamond to them so that they can set the diamond? Is this normal in the industry? 10k is a lot of $$$ for me, and I want to be careful before I''d let it out of my sight. Eg. I am planing to take the diamond to gem trade labs for an inscription -so it will be easier for a novice like me to identify it after its been set. Lucky for me I''m close to Carlsbad, CA.

Thanks in advance for the advice/opinions/warnings/suggestions.

I have heard that this is indeed common for D'Vatche... someone else could probably tell you more... just out of curiosity, who did y ou get your platinum setting from? I am looking to get a platinum surprise diamond D'Vatche setting for a similar sized princess and haven't had a whole lot of luck!

I received some excellent assistance from Whiteflash regarding the D'Vatche - but if you go to D'Vatche's website, they list each vendor who is authorized to sell their product. Just try a google search under "dvatche ring"

Sounds like an excellent price.

Yes, it's pretty standard. They're a quality company, and want one of their quality setters to set the stone. I think they have certain guarantees which are honored only if their setters do the work.

You definitely want to have a quality setter doing the work, as average setters have been known to chip the corners on princess cuts from time-to-time.

If you're talking about the transport process, yes. Just be sure to use either (1) return receipt insured registered mail, or (2) their fedex number with their insurance covering it.

Thousands upon thousands of diamonds are shipped all across the world everyday using this method of transport. The Hope Diamond was shipped registered mail by Harry Winston, after he arranged a big phony police escort as a diversion.

If you're talking about having your diamond "switched" by the D.Vatche company, yes, you're still safe. Any successful and reputable company values their reputation more than your princess cut.

The direct link to the D. Vatche web site is http://www.dvatche.com pretty simple, heh? And we're going to have to call them because we are an authorized dealer, but our listing doesn't appear on their site under Oregon...?

We've sent several diamonds to D. Vatche to have them set and have not experienced any problems... Of course, you should have either the original vendor who sold you the diamond or an independent Gemologist evaluate the diamond upon receipt after having it set to better protect your interests...
