Advice you'll get is to avoid very goood cuts, all together and then drill down excellents depending on proportions and geometry to ideal TIC standards. Will offer best light return across a broader range of environments. If on a budget consider compromising another C over cut.

PS - geometry of the stone you listed faces up smaller for its weight due to its depth as well = wasted $$

Is there a particular reason for the D color and VVS clarity?

No particular reason, I was just searching various sites and this one kind of jumped out because the price was lower than most anything else I saw around that size with that clarity and color. I've only been looking a short while, I just wanted to make sure this wasn't something I shouldn't pass up.

Like KobiD said, I'd drop down in color to where you are comfortable which would be 2-3 grades for sure I would guess, and you can also drop down in clarity to a VS2 or an eye clean SI stone. This will give you more to spend on cut, which is the most important factor. Only look at excellent (GIA) or ideal (AGS) cuts. Always use the HCA tool to assess your possible diamonds. You can find that here: https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

You can use the diamond search on here with the advanced options to really narrow down what you are looking for. For example, here is a link of a search I used using a budget for you of $9,000. I broadened the color all the way down to H and clarity down to an SI1 (which you would have to check for eye cleanliness). This search is limited to stones which score excellent, less than 2, on the HCA tool.

This is just meant to introduce you to the search function and how you can adjust it to suit your needs. Just remember that the HCA tool is a rejection tool, and only meant to help you rule out stones that are likely to be poor performers. It is not a selection tool that guarantees good performance. For that, you will need to request additional information and images from the various vendors.

It is very much too steep and too deep and will be likely to look like (Insert appropriate expletive and bad thoughts here...)

That is why it is so cheap. The site is hoping to find someone to take that dog out of their lives.

You'll find most here will suggest to put cut as the top priority (and many also chase out high end optical symetry as well).
Colour is a personal choice depending on what your eyes can see and what you feel is acceptable.
Clarity VS1-VS2 are reasonably safe choices for sight unseen. SI1 can be eye clean (again depending on how your vision is, the nature of the inclusion, etc). Anything above VS1 is really for peace of mind. Note that size can impact on whats visible and whats not. Bigger diamonds, bigger facets, bigger inclusions, will likely be more visible.
Carats - a measure of weight. The shape of the diamond will dictate where it holds its weight. Thick girdles, and deep narrow stones are less prefered as they won't improve the face up size. You're best determining a rough range of size (ie 5.6mm) and then searching ideal cuts that meet this range. They will weigh less than a steep deep vg/good cut.

Hope that helps some.
