Hi,

I saw some where (can''t remember which websites) that there was a chart of the diameters for the corresponding carat weight of an ideal cut diamond. I am wondering if any of you have seen it or can give me some insight? I am looking for a 2 carat round with ideal or premium cut. But since most jewelry stores and even listings on pricescope doesn''t supply the sarin data, I was hoping I can use the diameter to help me narrow down to which stones to pursue.

If there is no such diameter chart, would any one be able to tell me what ideal cut diameters for a 2 carat, 2.1 carat, 2.2 carat would be? Thanks in advance for your help.

I''ve really enjoyed reading all the expert opinions on this forum. Must say some of you know more than the people working in a jewelry store.

the mesasurements of a 2.00cts. stone should be around the 8.2mm.
here are some of the criterias that you should be looking for in an ideal make.
D=59-62%
T=53-57%
girdle=thn-med
culet=none
polish=ex-id
symm=ex-id
flour.=none-faint

if it is a g.i.a stone,than it shouldn't have cr.angles>35%
or <30% ,(under comments.)

hope this helps you a bit.

Here's a diam. chart:

To find the "ideal" diameter, use the following formula:

"Ideal" Diameter = 6.5 * (Carat Weight)^(1/3)

That is, the "ideal" diameter is 6.5 times the cube root of the carat weight.

In the case of a 2 carat stone, the "ideal" diameter is 8.19mm (to the nearest hundredth).

Thank you all for being so helpful. Just one more question, does it mean that if a 2 carat has a diameter close to the 8.2mm, chances are it is close to ideal cut? the 2 carats I have seen so far have diameters that range for 7.96 mm - 8.15mm which is no where near the 8.2 mm. What does it mean to the sparkle if the diameter is on the low side like 8.00mm other than the fact that the spread is not good. Is there another parameter that I can look for to compensate for the smaller diameter that will make the stone worth considering? Any insight would be greatfull. Thank you!

Is there any rules of thumb for determing the same with princess stones?

The "ideal" dimensions would be given by the following formula:

"Ideal" Width = w * (Carat Weight)^(1/3)

That is, the ideal width should be w times the cube root of the carat wieght (where "w" is the "ideal" width for a 1-carat princess).

I have no idea what the ideal width of a 1-carat princess would be. Maybe Dave Atlas or someone else who actually knows diamonds could comment.
