Hi PSers,

A bit of a gloomy Monday for me here as I looked down at work today to see that one of the side diamonds in my engagement ring had fallen out! :blackeye: I have only had it for 4 months and as the ring has a lifetime guarantee there is no problems in getting it fixed, I just now have a few dilemmas in so far as having to be without it for a week (I know this is petty in the scheme things but still...) and the thought that it might be better to adjust the setting now to something more durable (if this is the issue) in order to save the fear of having to experience this again :((
My ring at the moment is a .70ct solitaire round with claw set side diamonds. The gold is 18ct and the width of the band is about 2mm. There doesn't seem to be any damage done to the prongs in that they are not bent or broken off or anything, it honestly just appears as though the claws have loosened a little and a stone has shifted out. I do not remember hitting it or catching it on anything???
My thought on changing anything would be to maybe have a similar style but one that has an edge of gold/milgrain on the side of the band. My question to all you knowledgeable folk is whether you think this extra gold on the side of the ring would protect the ring in any way in the long run, or if it isn't really going to make that big a difference. I am able to change it for one that is of this description through the same jeweler and its width comes to 3mm.
My other thought is that I should maybe change it to one that has similar gold edging as well as a round bezel halo to protect the main stone??? This probably sounds pedantic but after looking at my poor ring with an empty spot I don't think I could bare to go through anything else similar when it could be in someway avoided. I do like the look of halos and although this really is all a crap thing, perhaps it is a way to update the ring to a different look- obviously much earlier than we anticipated. Does anyone have any other ideas? I'm up for anything!
Sorry to have gone on a little, but I know if anyone can help me it's you guys!!!
Thank you sincerely!

My ER is pave that is set with 4 individual prongs for each stone in a channelish setting. There is gold on each side of each stone, it is more of a metal look but it's also milgrained so it looks nice. I have been wearing it over 5 years, and not too daintily either, I have never lost a stone.

AH!!! That has to be the biggest fear of mine - loosing a stone and not knowing when or how it happened - I am sorry that this happened! YIKES!

Can you post a photo of what you have been wearing, and what you might like as an alternative?
Just as another thought - if you were going to change it up, would you consider platinum? I know - pros and cons to both, including the cost factor - but I say that because I'm thinking I may be redoing my ring (only 7 months old, so similar to your situation) but mine is due to discolouration. I'm just rumbling that thought in my head because A) won't discolour and B) stronger prongs. THat may be of interest to you - just throwin' it out for contemplation!

Any how- photos please and we can offer better suggestions....

If that is the setting you loved, then no, I certainly wouldn't change it this soon. Plenty of people here have settings like that and haven't had a problem. I would ask the jeweler to check the other stones and tighten the prongs if necessary. Hopefully it was just an unusual occurrence.
