Hi, I just gave a diamond to the local BBB to be set in the Ritani Endless Love setting. How do I know when I get the ring back 3-4 weeks from now that the stone in the ring is indeed the one I gave them? The AGS number is laser inscribed on the griddle but I don''t think that is visible once the stone is set. I''m not saying I don''t trust BBB, but was curious to know if there was a way to verify which stone is in ring I get back. Thanks in advance for your replies.

It would be a good idea to "memorize" your inclusions enough that you can recognize them. It was also suggested to me that if it is necessary to ever leave your diamond someplace, it''s a good idea to have both you and the jeweler look at the stone under magnification and discuss the inclusion plot both BEFORE and AFTER you leave it.

How about leaving a xerox copy of the cert with your stone?

You could have the same jeweler verify the marks on the cert match the marks on the stone before and after you drop off the stone.

Oh, and don''t buy those pesky flawless diamond.

The lab report and/or the appraisal should contain a diagram of the inclusions in the stone called a ‘plot’. This is a map to help you locate and identify the particular inclusions in your stone and is supplied for exactly this reason. As Steve mentioned, the setter will usually try to set the stone in a way that allows you to see the girdle inscription although it helps to remind them that it’s there or they tend to forget. Most BBB showrooms will have a microscope that you can use when you pick up the ring to look for the inscription.

If you buy a loupe and practice with it a little while, you can get pretty good at reading these things.

We bought the diamond online too but had someone local set the diamond in the setting we bought. I actually got to sit right along side of him as he set it.

Never took my eyes of the diamond the whole time. We also have a lasser insciribed diamond and he set it so it is visible between the prongs.

It was very interesting to talk to him and watch him work on it as he was setting it.

Make sure you can read the numbers on the girdle when you pick it up if you can''t be there to watch.

I don''t think they''ll be able to see the inscription after the stone is set because they''re getting the Ritani Endless Love setting. The only other way to identify the diamond would be via an inclusion plot, as far as I can tell.

I think all of these suggestions would work better if you had not already dropped of your stone...that said bring the plot with you when you pick it up and double check it against your stone.

A Gem Print scan taken of the diamond in advance of handing it off to a jeweler and verified upon return of the diamond used in conjunction with the inscription if visible AND verification of the inclusions can be a great way to ease your mind... A responsible jeweler will usually make an effort to ensure that the inclusions within your diamond are verified prior to taking the diamond in from you for setting and will assist you in verifying those inclusions when you pick up the stone, if nothing else for their own protection against the accusation of stone switching because diamonds often look different when they are picked up than they do when dropped off simply because they are "clean"

proper take-in procedures like this have saved our behinds more than a few times because people get used to the way their diamond looks all covered in hair spray, hand lotion, etc. and can freak out when they come to pick it up and all of that cloudiness is gone... Being able to refer them back to their inclusions sets their minds at ease and saves us a whole lot of time and explanations... Ask the folks at BBB to help you verify your diamond in comparison to the plotting diagram on the lab report when your ring comes back from Ritani and all should be well.

Word of caution on inscriptions....we just had this happen to one of our customers. When the diamond was set and the ring re-polished, the black was polished right out of the inscription. The customer called us thinking that the diamond may have been switched or the inscription taken off, but it was just really hard to see. Just a note for anyone having a thrid party set a diamond that was previously inscribed.

Wow icemyster I love your aviatar!
