After going with the BF to the big stores one last time before pulling the trigger on an e-ring setting, I was urged by a brilliant salesperson to try the rings on with w-bands to see how I'd like the set together (why I did not have the good sense to do this before is beyond me). Up until this point, I was sure I wanted a thin pave e-ring and thin pave (or eternity) w-band. This salesperson also urged me to try on a solitaire e-ring with a pave w-band, and now I'm very torn between the two. My biggest fear in going for the pave e-ring was that it might compete with my center stone for attention (the specs of the stone are a surprise, but I think will be approx 1.7 RB). My gut instinct when I tried the set on on was that I felt the pave e-ring on pave w-band overwhelmed or drew attention away from the center stone (to me, it seemed there is less of a visual emphasis on the center stone, as it is almost competing with two rows of pave).

When I had the solitaire on, I kept saying, "it's so pretty!" and the BF actually expressed a preference for the first time in this whole process (he does tend do like simple). However, since this is such a paradigm shift for me in terms of what I thought I wanted, I'm having trouble pulling the trigger. While alone I think I still prefer the pave e-ring more, as a set, I think there is something about the simplicity of the solitaire with diamond w-band that is so classic and beautiful and really makes the stone pop.

While it might purely boil down to personal taste, I thought I'd put it out there so the experts could chime in on the issue - I wonder if others have struggled with this same dilemma and what helped sway you one way or another. I'm attaching two hand pics that we took at the store with each of the set options on my finger. The only caveat is that the pave on pave look pictured is with a cushion instead of a RB.

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice! This forum is helpful beyond words.

I loooooove the look of a classic solitaire with the diamond band, it never goes out of style. Plus you have flexibility to swap out different bands. If I may be play the devils advocate.......maybe go with the vatche setting diamondseeker, bliss, and a few others have. Yummy. :naughty:

I have to agree...the classic solitaire with a diamond band is so beautiful, plus you have the ability to use an insert ring guard when you want to dress it up, use just about any band with it, put matching bands one on either side, etc.

Could you be drawn to the solitaire a little more because it's the round brilliant you love?

There can also be a difference between what you like to look at and what looks good on you. I'm often drawn to detailed jewelry (filigree, delicate designs), but for some reason, they just don't look good on me. Go for what you think looks good on you.

I like the look of the solitaire. As others say, it will never go out of style and you can easily dress it up with bands for added sparkle.

Another vote for the solitaire....I love the flexibility it will give you!

I also prefer the look of the solitaire. I think it is classic, and gives many options for wedding bands and stacking bands.

I prefer the set with bands that match, but they are both beautiful settings. 8) I personally prefer the set with pave diamonds on both the w-ring and e-ring bands. I think I would also like it if both were simple as it does draw the attention to the center stone. In any case I don't think either one distracts, or takes away from the center stone as can happen with some settings.

You can't go wrong with either one. =)

Re: Desperate for advice in choosing between these 2 setting

I guess you can figure out which I like best! Another good reason is that you can later have alternate wedding bands if you want some variety.

Re: Desperate for advice in choosing between these 2 setting

I'm biased because I have a solitaire and a diamond WB and I love that I can wear different bands stacked with it for a different look. While it did look a bit plain when I was engaged, my WB really makes it complete. However, you can't go wrong with either option...both are beautiful.

Thanks for all the helpful comments!

Armywife and Diamondseeker-- yes! Since thinking about the solitaires, Iv'e been really drawn to that Vatche setting, but I'm still trying to decide if I'm more of a 4 or 6-prong girl. Diamondseeker- your beautiful avatar reconfirmed my love of the solitaire look every time I logon! Do you know of any settings similar to your Vatche but with 4 prongs?

Lotus- there is such a difference between what you think you want and what you like on your hand. I feel so grateful I tried the set on before any decisions had been made.

Msacornblue- yes, I think one of my fears was the the solitaire alone may look to plain, but engagement is short and I love the way the set looks together (and particularly the flexibility of many w-band options as many people have pointed out). If you can't tell, I was leaning strongly towards the solitaire set, I just keep going to work and seeing all these pave bands which look so beautiful and make me have second thoughts!

Re: Desperate for advice in choosing between these 2 setting

I prefer the solitaire too. I really like the contrast between the diamond band and the metal, it makes both rings stand out.

Re: Desperate for advice in choosing between these 2 setting

I too prefer the solitaire. Add a really blingy 5 stone wedding band, and it's a killer look!

Re: Desperate for advice in choosing between these 2 setting

It really depends on the look you want- I think the solitaire setting allows flexibility in stacking rings- BUT I love the look where you have a matching Ering and wedding band and then a stacker in the middle to break it up- lots of sparkle!

I dont' think you can do wrong :)

Re: Desperate for advice in choosing between these 2 setting

Thanks for all the helpful input! You've all definitely given me some good food for thought. I tend to gravitate towards cleaner, more simple jewlerly, so think I'm leaning towards the solitaire (!). I just can't wait to see the finished product and have done so much thinking about it that I'm almost to the point where I'm ready to ceade all decision making control to the BF (a shocking move if you knew me!).

Diamondseeker-- thanks for the recommendations, the Vatche Caroline is so pretty! For comparison's sake, do you know of any 4 prong without the suspension bar (similar to your Vatche/Tiffany-esque setting but with 4 instead of 6 prongs?).
