I had a cavity filled on the 5th. It was under a cracked sealant and the dentist said it was very small. The tooth did cause me pain/discomfort before and that is the only reason we knew there was a cavity there. It did not show up on the x-ray. This is only my third cavity so I don''t have much experience but the tooth felt fine until a couple of days ago. Now it hurts when I try to chew on that side (it is a lower molar). I will call the dentist tomorrow but since I have to wait 12+ hours I though maybe someone would have an idea of why the tooth is so sensitive. It really only bothers me when I eat but something is not right.

It sounds like the filling may be too high. Your dentist can grind it down a bit more to give you some comfort. You should bit down on a piece of "paper" that will mark your filling when it''s too high. You need to move your jaw back and forth to mimic eating to get it at the right level.

SS, thanks for answering. She did have me do that several times. It is just so odd b/c it was fine for almost a week.

In my experience, once the swelling of the procedure has gone down, I always have to go back and get the height adjusted again. I would definitely call tomorrow though. Maybe it''s trying to push up or something.

bummer, I was hoping to avoid another dental appointment but living with pain is not an option!

sounds terrible Tacori - I hope you get this taken care of soon!

I don''t know, Tacori...I''ve had 2 fillings that bothered me on and off after getting them done for almost a year. I never had issues when I had the silver ones, but that was a long long time ago and I''ve since had those 2 removed and replaced with the plastic, plus had two more fillings. The ones that have bothered me only did it sporadically and it''s been probably 3 years now since I had them done.

Is it sharp pain or is it more discomfort when you bite down? I wonder if it''s the filling settling into the tooth gradually? I just don''t know.

Ugh, sorry to high jack. . .I rarely do so. . .

Monarch, when you had your silver fillings removed, was it a huge ordeal or just a few hundred per tooth? I had gone in b/c the only filling I have (silver) was causing sensitivity and the dentist said it would cost $1,400 (or $900 with insurance) to replace with porcelain because my tooth needed to be filed down a bit (I forget what the procedure is called). I was thinking of going to one of those dental school places. lol

Oh man, I don''t even remember, MC. It definitely wasn''t $1400, but I''d have to consult my old bills to see what I actually paid. I had Delta Dental at the time which covered a lot, so I doubt if I paid more than a couple hundred. I don''t see anything wrong with going to a dental school. Is there one in your area known for having a really good program? If not I might be a bit wary, but if you are sure it''s a well respected program then I don''t see the harm in having a procedure like that done there.

Happened to me when I had all my amalgam fillings replaced a few years ago. The dentist said to use Sensodyne or any other toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
