I had to go back & read my own question to figure out what you were saying, Sharon ... but when I did I laughed out loud! Thanks for weighing in! I *do* still want a version of these earrings ... badly. *Which* version is still TBD. I almost wish I *didn''t* though as it would be a lot easier, less nerve-wracking. What if you took three of the petals and had them meet at a center point. It would look like a lotus. Could you sketch this out? If not, I''ll give it a try, but it won''t be prettyDate: 7/19/2009 11:34:20 PM

I love white gold and diamonds and if I did the earrings, it would be in white gold. I meant that instead of four petals you talked about like a cross design with triangles at the end like the band.
I''d lotus them out, and maybe add milgrain at the edge of each petal. outlineing the petal shape.
I like that shape! It''s... pointier... than the original, LOL! It''s more defined though, which might get you closer to the cross concept.Date: 7/20/2009 2:49:44 PM

This lotus shape is lovely .... I know, Dani, ... the balls are killing me. One minute I kinda dig ''em & the next I think they ruin the whole outline/look/feel.
Oh, oops. Sorry!Date: 7/20/2009 12:43:58 PM

MC -- Thanks! I wish they were an alternative to *my* studs. They''ll actually be an alternative to studs period. As I don''t own any.Does that change your vote?![]()

Your proposal is both wise & prudent. Which means I''ll probably continue in the absolute opposite direction.Date: 7/20/2009 3:06:36 PM

Yes, that does change my vote!!! Personally, I would go with studs over the earrings you''re contemplating. The earrings are cute, but studs are an instant classic and you may be happier with those in the long-run.Date: 7/20/2009 12:43:58 PM

Oh ... now my sides are aching too. Funny! You know, Marian ... I bought my best friend earrings VERY similar to those lotus outline ones on wires with dangling dark blue briolettes for her b-day last month. They were just a fashion pair .. gold filled ... and because they were yellow gold toned I never even considered them for myself. Think they''re gorgeous though. A bit too out-there for only my *third* pair of fine jewelry earrings maybe ... If I see a fashion pair like it again maybe I''ll snap it up. Why should she have all the fun?Date: 7/20/2009 3:58:27 PM

I''m just going to lay it on the line. I''m kind of obsessed with the earrings you already have too. In fact, I''ve been searching for somewhere that sells them, as I had it in my mind they were from etsy, but they''re not. So, no help at all. Just dang, I wish I could have a pair of the rose gold flower diamond ones!!!Date: 7/20/2009 3:51:36 PM

From a design sense, I think its a brilliant idea. In terms of these earrings -- I think its the negative space I''m most drawn to. The *lack* of anything in the corners, so more earlobe shows. Making the whole thing seem more airy & ethereal.Date: 7/20/2009 5:34:04 PM

Hmmm...how about almonds instead of balls (there''s a joke in there somewhere)? It would echo the lotus shape. I see it placed at 45 degrees and angled from the center on its axes without extending past the corners.
Its funny ... I just did a google image search for lotus earrings & these came up. They are from here and are sooooo similar to the gold-toned ones I bought my friend at a local boutique. Same price range too. I like the ones with pearl dangles also.Btw, cute cutout earrings? Where''s the pic from? uh oh, there I go again. I sympathize with you again on the studs. Baby old mine cuts are the only ones I own.
Oh you totally can have them! Here is the designer's website. Just email her with the description & she could probably send you a pair. They're about $285 if I recall correctly. They're one of her most popular designs & so she'll probably know just what you're talking about. They come in yellow, white & rose gold -- she also does the design on dangles & as a ring! I was obsessed with them for about 6 months before I got them -- kept debating between two different pairs. Own the other one now too! Really adore her stuff & expected to find something in her latest work as my b-day gift this year but she was really working mostly in yellow gold on her new stuff. Nothing floated my boat the way the pieces I already own did. She's such a nice lady. I've met her four times in person now at craft fairs & shows. Big fan!Date: 7/20/2009 5:36:51 PM

#1 -- oof. i know, right? I wrote a long response to the designer laying out my hesitations & ideas & experiments (I didn''t mention earlier but I''ve been wearing around paper versions for a day now -- and NO I won''t post pictures. Its too weird.) Bottom line - they seem more "shield" than "lotus".Date: 7/20/2009 5:58:06 PM

That''s why I loved the Cartier earrings too. The outlining of positive/negative space and the s-curves of the points adding an antique feel. Nothing else to distract around the diamonds themselves. Sigh. I really do think any way to avoid copyright issues would hinge on technical details only.Date: 7/20/2009 5:46:25 PM

I think I will focus on incorporating elements from the earrings you just posted for a fun little project instead. My baby omcs (from Shreve, Crump & Low) will have to tide me over for now. Maybe I will try to entertain myself by trying to take pics of it, something I''ve avoided because photographing diamonds would probably bring out my ocd![]()

Eh I'm a nervous wreck today while I want to hear back on different ideas & my suggestions. Been super swamped with work so I haven't been able to think about it a lot time wise but its a nagging undercurrent of uncertainty & suspense!
One idea I had was to reduce the size of her current design for the earrings, taking them a bit smaller than the original to compensate for the slightly heavier feel by making it more delicate in scale.
Another was to over exaggerate the lotus form based on the shape I posted above - though we both feel it might get too pointy & clovery & take on a more specific cultural reference than the original.
The good news for Etsy consumers is that she's probably going to make the earrings as currently drawn. Period. Whether it turns out to be *my* final design or not. I agree with that idea as I think its terrific -- just not *exactly* what I'd wanted. Though it still is an option. Hmmm.
Thanks again to everyone who has thrown out ideas & piped up with their votes!
