Hi all

Im new to pricescope and am looking to surprise my wife with an emerald cut diamond ring for a special anniversary of around 1ct. She has wanted a squarish emerald cut for years after having seen some antique asschers and squarish type emerald cuts in a high end jeweller near where we live. She doesnt want a classic square asscher, she likes the slightly rectangular look which I think still counts as an emerald cut. The only online jeweller I have come across that has any of these and also decent viewing angles on them is James Allen. Are there any other vendors with these shaped diamonds that also have pics/ videos of them?

I have found two options which are on hold for me but Im not sure if they are a good deal and if they are well cut. I have read the cut advice on emerald cuts on this forum and these two have a slightly larger depth than is recommended as ideal but I think that the outline shape of them and the facet patterning is just what my wife likes. She has pointed out diamonds to me before and talked about being able to see rectangles of different sizes inside the diamond going down towards the centre. I want to make sure the diamond I choose has this and also sufficient fire and white light return (although I understand from my research that this will not be prominent as in an ideal cut round).

Please could you give your opinions on these two:

My wife likes white gold and I am thinking of a halo ring which will strongly accentuate the clipped corners (octagonal look) of the diamond. I am wondering whether the I color stone would look too tinted in the white metal halo ring? But am I paying too much for a higher color with the E when my wifes other diamonds are generally F-G H color? If I went for the more expensive diamond I would probably have to opt for an inexpensive plain setting with no accents. The ring will be in addition to her round brilliant engagement ring rather than a replacement for it and she will probably wear it on the other hand. The engagement ring is G color solitaire so I want this new ring not to look massively different in color to her engagement ring. Budget is ideally $3500 - $4500 for the diamond (although the E color diamond above is quite a bit more than this).

Im in the UK and there is not a great range of nice emerald cuts to choose from over here compared to what seems to be available online. Help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

If I were choosing one for myself it would be the 1.06. No contest.

That's what I thought to begin with but watching the video a few times I am noticing that I can see through the diamond to the grey background behind quite a bit more with the 1.06 color stone than the 1.01 and I wonder if this is what people on PS are referring to as "leakage"?

Have you requested Aset images on those two stones? While not definitive, an Aset does provide helpful info.

Of the two you've posted, I actually prefer the patterning of the 1.01ct, but both are attractive to the eyes.

Ditto...request aset images and post before deciding. They both look nice. I like the faceting pattern on the 1.01 but
that E sure it bright.

Scroll down to the 3rd post and look at Emerald Lovers ring...really beautiful!

Thanks for the suggestion, I have requested the ASETs. I will definitely need help interpreting them.

Thanks also for the links to the halo ring examples.

I am just wondering - is it possible for an emerald cut with shape ratio of between 1.1 and 1.25 to be rated as an excellent cut? Is there any requirement on how fat or long an emerald cut is "supposed" to be?

Oh gosh, I was going to say wait on the ASETs since they only allow 3, but I take it those were the only two diamonds that had the cut you wanted? They are both beautiful stones, and I guess I slightly favor the E. I really prefer F-G-H color because you can get a larger stone than an E for the money, yet they are whiter than an I color.

The 1.06 E draws my eyes in and is more aesthetically pleasing to me. However, you know your S/O, what are her tastes?

The 1.06 really draws the eye in all the way down to a bottomless stone. The E colour is also a bonus as ECs will show colour easier than a RB.

I managed to find a third diamond to get an asset comparison although it doesn't have the same square shape and asscher-ish look.

I had originally thought that the 1.06 was the "dream diamond" for the reasons that diamondseeker, resonanceoflife and chrono all mentioned, even though that one is challenging budget-wise. However, Im a bit wary in case it has leakage, especially as it is emerald cut and I understand that emerald cuts and leaky stones both need to be kept very clean in order to maintain their sparkle, so Im hoping that this diamond is not a combination of both of those issues. Hopefully the ASETs will be informative.

ASET images should help determine if it's leakage. I don't know much about emerald cuts, but I don't think what you're describing is leakage.
