Could one of the experts please weigh in and enlighten me...Which measurement do each of the dimension measurements on an appraisal represent? For example, if a stone is measured as follows:

8.85 x 8.80 x 5.21

Exactly which measurements correspond to what (which is diameter, which is depth, etc.)?

Thank you for the enlightenment!

Thanks DG! I know this is going to sound stupid but which is the across the top (girdle to girdle) measurement? Is it width?

And which is table to culet? Is that length or depth?

I''m not DG, but table to culet is depth and girdle to girdle is width-that''s why there''s two measurements for that-they measure it the long way and the short way.

Yes indeedy. And on a round they''ll take several measurements and report the two extremes.

aHA! That''s what was screwing me up...I couldn''t get the two first measurements being so close all the time...now I get it. It''s like measuring E-W and N-S, as it were.

So given that, are most stones bit wonky and not exactly the same on the first two measurements? I''m just curious...

Almost all of the round diamonds I''ve seen both on here and searching for myself are a tiny bit wonky. And I''m sure most fancies are wonky, too. Maybe that will be the next super ideal characteristic people will want-perfectly round-the same exact number no matter what way you measure!

Great question Surgirl, I have been wondering that exact question myself. Mine is 8.12 - 8.22, so I guess mine would be really out of round, although I can''t see it. What is yours?

Reality check.

Diamonds are not stamped out widgets. Not only are they the hardest material on earth; they also have hard & soft sides, not to mention inclusions and graining.Even the best-handled diamond requires adjustments in cross-working which an astute cutter must compensate-for in brillianteering. There is no such thing as a perfect wire-frame diamond. What man can do with these wonderful crystals nature has produced is quite amazing, but nature still exerts a little bit of control.

John, I didn''t mean to imply I was annoyed my stone isn''t perfectly round...Hey, I''m a realist!

I just wondered which dimensions corresponded to what measurements..

Junebug, my stone''s measurements are listed in the OP.

Oh hey. I didn''t mean to imply that you implied.

Oh, I know, John! I was totally joking-I''m definitely not one of those super duper ideal D/IF types who expects a diamond to be absolutely perfect. I just figured that would be the next level for the super duper ideal types. Just being a smarta**!
