So this is the setting it''s going in... SETTING

Now the diamond... as your great advice has stated, I want a GREATLY cut diamond (round). Probably about the 0.75-1.0 ct range... Preferably VS1 or VS2 or maybe SI1. Colour not too important, just want a really nice all round ring.

I was thinking of maybe something like this one...

Or maybe this one...

What are your thoughts? Any thing in particular to look out for? And are any places better to go than others?

The first stone is a classic 60/60. Some like them, some don't. I like 60/60 stones and the Very Good from GIA means you'll save money as evidenced by the price tag for the stone. The second stone is certainly more ideal and received the GIA Excellent Cut designation. It too should be beautiful. As an SI1 you should ask the good people at James Allen if it's eye clean though. Good luck with this.........

Thanks for the advice Rod, will ask them if it''s eye-clean. See things like this I would never know without your help!

Plus, also if anyone out there a little more experience can help with this, if you wouldn''t mind just doing a quick search yourself, and post any links of well priced diamonds in the range I am looking at? That would be a HUGE help!

Zac,

The HCA is not in love with either of those, and since your world of options is pretty large...no reason I can see to settle for anything that doesn''t score well.

The search by cut db is an easy tool, that saves you some work in calculating that score, and it generally pools together higher quality options.

One you might consider among a number is this one.

So what do I look at in particular under the cut by db tool?

... Had a bit of a play around with the tool... so a lower overall score means a better diamond, right? I found this one , what do you think? -HERE-

Also, I''ve read up about polish & Symmetry... how important are these?

shallow.

it may look dark.

Hey that looks like a good buy too! Has anyone dealt with NiceIce?

Also, is there really a big difference between VG and Excellent for Symmetry & Polish?

NiceIce has a very solid reputation.

There is not much dfference to the naked eye between VG and EX, according to GIA. http://diamonds.pricescope.com/symm.asp Makes a difference in price, though.

By not much difference, would anyone be able to notice? You said dull?

No, nothing about dull.

I limit myself to EX symmetry when looking for diamonds to suggest. Average person can't tell between EX and VG finish.

My apologies you said dark, not dull... Hmm I guess to get a perfect diamond without some flaws like this... would have to stretch my budget... or maybe I should choose to have a slightly lower symmetry & polish - in order to get a nice 1ct...

I really didn''t think it would all be this hard!!!

Okay so would it be better to have a better clarity, and less polish/symmetry? or maybe go for an SI ring, and have excellent polish/symmetry?

dark was referring to the shallow proportions on the 1 ct stone; nothing to do with finish.

the hypothetical tradeoffs between VS vs. SI and EX vs VG finish are in a region of minimally to totally not noticeable to the naked eye. However, all this online buying is done with high magnification, Ideal Scope images, and proportion scanners... "paralysis by analysis," perhaps.

Thanks a heap... so I think I might be down to the following...

Number One
Number Two and
Number Three

So I just need to decide whether to compromise a little on polish & symmetry to push it to 1.01ct, or to go for a 0.9ct with ideal/excellent in all areas...

Does anyone have any advice? Or notice anything I may have missed?

I wouldn''t compromise on symmetry, but you can go to just good on polish and unless you have microscopes for eyes, you''re not going to see the difference.
