Deceptive shops on etsy (?)

Am I the only one who is shocked that etsy lets shops get away with item descriptions that bury the lead? I love browsing etsy but I’m continuously surprised by how many stores claim to sell “diamonds”, “created diamonds” or “lab diamonds” for rip-off pricing (ie cheap for real diamonds but overpriced by 1000% for cz, which is what they’re actually selling). The shop claims this necklace retails for $2750.

I‘m guessing this “created diamond” is CZ? What the heck is the GAL certificate?

I wonder how many customers made purchases thinking they’re getting “diamonds” because most customer reviews refer to the stones as “diamonds”.

they make money off the volume of listings so i guess it's not in their interest to crack down on that. it happens all over the internet though. i miss the old etsy when it was just quirky crafty people.

Seems like this shop has a few items with REAL diamonds. But the setup seems designed to confuse shoppers. In the reviews, at least a few people thought they were getting diamonds. PS-type people are rare so I wouldn’t be surprised if some customers never realize their “diamonds” aren’t real

Etsy is a sewer. Worse.
They booted us. Why? Because they say I don’t make every piece personally. Like all those mass merchandisers there are diamond setters and jewelers.
What?.?
How about loose stone sellers? Are they all getting down in the mines with shovels??
We have spent considerable time and resources trying to fix this-no avail. Unfortunately we need to try to get back to the Etsy cesspool because in today’s internet a seller really needs to get as much exposure as possible.
Meantime, (literally) dozens of slimeball, sleazbag sellers are stealing my pics and usi;g them to misrepresent whatever they are selling.
That’s perfectly ok as far as Etsy is concerned.
Steps off soapbox and thanks for listening. But I would not trust Etsy as far as I could throw an elephant.

I'm not shocked, or bothered at all because I'd never buy a thing from eBay or esty.
I'm not a gambler, so don't care what happens on these (what I consider to be) gambling websites.

I equate those high-risk places with $exual behavior at bath houses, parks, bathrooms, and brothels, and gambling in casinos.

People who engage in such high risk behavior get no sympathy from me when it goes bad, which it eventually will.

Buyer beware.
Patronize businesses that are more legitimate.

Etsy has definitely lost the plot, they are becoming just another site to buy mass manufactured goods from. They also are constantly changing their algorithms which has an effect on the smaller shops, one day you are making money and the next thing you know...crickets.

If they focused on handmade, artisan, vintage quality goods they would be much more successful and well respected IMO.

Has anyone been able to view just a shop's negative feedback? I don't see the option, and if someone has 1k in feedback it is a real pain to comb through the all the feedback to search for the negatives.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for a diamonds by the yard necklace. When I stumbled upon this listing, I was excited at first ... then suspicious. Looking at the customer pics, some of the “diamonds” looked like CZ to me, which is why I started digging deep into the reviews.

I wish there’s a way to filter by bad reviews. But I know a lot of sellers find ways of avoiding poor reviews (lots of weird stories out there). There are also lots of legitimate stores on etsy, which makes it easier for the scammy ones to blend in. It’s really too bad

This listing is even more egregious. It doesn’t mention “simulant” or “simulated diamonds anywhere. Under “item details”, the seller lists “diamond gemstones”. I find these kinds of listings very irritating.

Even when I filter search results by “diamonds”, I get tons of CZ stuff in the search results. The sellers deliberately classify their cz inventory as diamonds (?)

I’ve only ever bought jewellery from Etsy vendors that have been recommended, or at least mentioned here on PS OR if I can follow them on IG or FB to see their interactions.

If you scroll through the details, it does say “high quality simulated diamonds”

I am extremely selective with the vendors I use. Not gonna lie, Etsy is useful to search when you want something specific from a vendor, but you really cannot trust sellers or their descriptions. I need to have conversations with vendors I've never used before I will buy from them. If I sniff any BS, then I don't buy. I think I would prefer to transact with vendors directly away from Etsy, but a couple such as Cecile Raley Designs and danielmjewelry only sell through Etsy.

I think even worse of Ebay. Ebay's terrible at recommending what I like for some reason, and lots of sleazy sellers and fake listings are on Ebay.

I am still aghast at the complete lack of disclosure as to what type of diamond simulant it is. There's a big difference between CZ and moissanite, for instance. And charging $35 for a "Certificate/Appraisal" for a simulant? Misleading and disreputable, if you ask me!

Oh yes, I agree, I had to look for that, but I suppose that’s how they cover themselves by hiding the actual description way down the page.

I still find things on Etsy, but I filter everything by Canada only. Not much of a selection, but at least the shipping is usually free or reasonable. If looking at US, I only use vendors I've heard of or know from here. Prices tend to be really high on Etsy though, if you're coming by way of Canada where we pay 40% more per item. I do read descriptions very carefully.
