Decent price for this diamond?

Have a question:

I have an option to buy the following diamond:

1.0 Cts.


ROUND


H


VS1


For what I think is a good price of about $2,500.


I am planning on using an Escrow and all that good stuff, but was wondering about the quality vs. price.


Any thoughts?

Do you have any information from the cert. such as table%, depth%, ect...?

From what I can see, that is a cheap price and I can't help but wonder what about that diamond makes the price that low.

Unfortuneatly, I don't have any other info than what is posted.


One reason why I am thankful for escrow. It will allow me to find a good appraiser here in Atlanta before the transaction is final.


I have the EGL #, but I called their office about 10 minutes before they close and it won't be till Monday when they can get back to me.


I was hoping to tap the wealth of knowledge in this recently discovered board.

I would be very weary,The price is too good to be true,Even if the stone has strong blue,First I would have them send you a copy of the cert.Then I would have it checked by a relaible appraiser/gemologist.If it all checks out ok.I would purchase it.
Oh by the way if it's legitimate, Please tell me who is selling,I'd like to buy many stones from them.

A. Too good to be true price.

There will be something seriously wrong with that stone.

The owner could sell it for more than $2500.00 to a jeweler if it is indeed a H/VS-1 and a decent or better make.

If it sounds too good to be true...

It is definitely too good to be true... And its depth % is 56.4. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a fish-eye.

30% discounts are not exacly easy to motivate. If this sold by a private person in a rush the price could be believable. Not much to loose with the Escrow in place. Even if both color and clarity grades are overstated the price still sounds ok. If the stone looks good (and this would imply a decent cut), even J-SI would be a bargain for the money (J/K-SI2 more like it). Of course, there are many more places where to choose among these lower grades - no need for over advertising.

What a night.


I apologize for my bluntness and asking such a question without being able to back it up.


Sometime Friday afternoon I found a diamond for sale at Ebay. The person selling told it was from an old engagement that didn't work. Everything about the description seemed accurate. There was an original receipt for a purchase of $7500.


To make a short story long, I phoned the LA office of the EGL with the cert. # to try to obtain the information that I was searching for. Well, I called them at 1:45PST and they close at 2:00PST.

The woman that I spoke with said it would be Monday before they could pull the file. After I realized that I wasn't going to be able to get the info that I wanted directly, I email the seller hoping she would be willing to speak over the phone (at my expense). Her response was of a friendly tone, but there was no phone number and she didn't answer all my questions.


After much deliberation, about 10 minutes before the auction ended, I made the decision that I would let the auction pass and then contact her to discuss options (there were no bids). With 45 secs left someone placed the minimum bid, and I was not of the mindset to fight for something that I didn't know all the details of (especially for $2500).

So, my philosophy in life is that EVERYTHING happens for a reason. It may not be clear sometimes, but if you keep good notes, you may be able to figure it out one day.




I was trying to answer a $2500 question as fast as I could ("Is that your final answer?").


After the auction ended I read almost every thread in this board and visit the sites (whiteflash, GOG, Icemine, etc.). Started to compare prices with some local stores that have online inventory and even Bluenile (any thoughts on BN from anyone?).


Needless to say I was up until about 2:30 in the morning reading.




After all this has passed, I am now planning on visiting PS on a regular basis and speaking with folks and sharing what I can.




The points of this story:


1) Sorry for the short, rude, a-typical "is this a good buy" post. It's not my style and it's not very polite either IMO.


2) There is a wealth of knowledge and people willing to help others out at this site just for the sake of doing it

(not a very happy angel, eh?) that I am looking forward to benefiting from and if I can impart any wisdom on, then even better.




3) I am looking forward to hanging around here and soaking up everything I can to make this purchase as smooth and pain free as possible. Plus, some of the threads of the proposals are funny (in a good way

).

Yay!

Well, it could have been a good one, but I would not have done it any differently. If you are set to buy and ex-ring, there will be plenty around. The 'profile' of the sale sounds correct: cert, Escrow, discount... If you have enough time and the inclination to chase down another like this, why not. However, there is always some risk involved and no reason not to be comfortable with the information you get.

Once set on using Escrow, would you consider using an appraisal as means to identify the stone? After all, if a certain EGL cert exists, it does not mean that the paper you are receiving is the one or the stone is the right one. There are plenty of EGL certs listed online for 'inspiration' if one wants to 'fabricate' a copy. The ability to judge the stone itself still remains the best test of confidence, I suppose.

Just as an aside, at least one Ebay shop advertises that sales are final since items have been returned altered after the inspection period... Not sure how widespread this is, but the 'scheme' surely is possible

You might want to agree with the seller on having the appraisal done if you go this route. Hopefully it will be the seller taking the leap of faith.
