Perhaps this is a silly concern of mine but I''d like to get some opinions.

Before I had discovered this site, I was referred to a diamond dealer in NYC by a colleague of mine. He quoted me on a few diamonds but I was still in the learning phase. I do not live anywhere near NYC so I would be going by the GIA info he gives me and his opinion.

After discovering this site, I have found whiteflash.com and goodoldgold.com. Both of those sites offer much more information rather than just the GIA certificate which allows a consumer to choose more wisely.

I have narrowed my selection down to 2 diamonds from GOG. Should I give the 1st dealer the opportunity to find a diamond with similar qualities and see what he comes up with quality wise and price wise or should I just go with GOG because I know so much more about the diamond than I''ll find out from the 1st dealer?

Thanks!

I''d go with GOG. Nice upgrade policy, and I''d bet that the original dealer couldn''t provide the same info to help you decide sight-unseen on a diamond. GOG also has a lot of happy customers around here, which is a nice thing as well. Still, I guess if the original dealer can provide the same info as GOG and has a similar upgrade policy, there''s no reason not to try them again... but all in all, seems easier to go with GOG.

Hi Taylor,

Thats up to you, but if GOG have what you want, then I would be inclined to stick with them - also does this dealer have a good reputation, return policy, or even an upgrade policy? An upgrade might not be a consideration now, but it might be in the future, it might be nice to have the option. Also can this dealer supply all the info you need to make an informed decision such as Idealscope, ASET, BrillianceScope etc? Really it depends on your comfort level.

Sure, why not - if you aren''t in a hurry doesn''t hurt to look around. I would require that the dealer give you IS pics if it is a round, and ASET pics if it is a fancy since you cannot evaluate in person.
