I just bought a diamond from Blue Nile. It seems very nice, but I have no other diamonds to compare it too as far as sparkle and such. It is rated by the GIA. Princess Cut- Square Modified Brilliant, 1.00 carat, measurements 5.84 x 5.56 x 3.74 mm, color G, VS2, polish: very good, symetery: very good, Fluorescence: medium blue. total depth 67.3%, table 78%, price $3,967.00.
My biggest issue is my girlfriend had said she wanted a princess cut. Last night we went to a brick and mortar jewelry store to look at settings and diamonds (she didn''t know I had already purchased a loose diamond) and now she says she''d like a round diamond. I know they''ll take the one I bought back, I guess I''ll have to pay for the mailing and insurance. I have no idea what insurance on $4k diamond would be.
So, #1 what''s your spin on the diamond I bought?
#2 what''s people experience with returning a diamond?
#3 round diamonds of simular quality seem much more expensive...why?
#4 At the jewelry store last night they showed us a round 1 carat that had a "good" cut and it seemed very sparkly, is a good cut nice or is the very good that much more worth the $.

If she wants a round (and she's SURE she wants a round, girls tend to get giddy over ANY diamonds) then you should return it. You can use USPS for up to $5,000 worth of insurance. In the scheme of things it's not too expensive, so just suck it up and do it if you're sure she wants it.

I don't know why rounds are more expensive, maybe because they're cut with more technology? Someone else can chime in here, but DO NOT buy one from a B&M with a simply "good" cut. Trust me on this one, an ideal cut will out sparkle any "good" cut in OTHER LIGHTING CONDITIONS. Jewelry store lighting is not the usual lighting, so all stones look nice there.

Once you've found a round that you think is nice, post all the specs from the certificate here and we can help and make sure you've selected a fantastic stone for your girl!

Hope that helps!

1. table is pretty big.
2. just do it.
3. higher demand for rounds. and less waste of rough.
4. Why don''t you look at an ideal and a good side by side?

If she wants a round, I''d return the stone. If it''s within the return period at BN, this shouldn''t be a big deal. USPS registered and insured is the only way to go. It''s really cheap (under $20), but it''s sometimes slow. The return is no big deal, don''t worry about this.

Yes, rounds are more expense than princesses...but they face up BIGGER!!! So it really evens out in the end!

If you do buy her a round, and use a jeweler near you, buy an AGS000, it ensures you get a decent diamond.

If you buy online, we could help you.

So far, great help! I ''m sure I will end up returning my diamond and buying a round. I plan on buying online. The jeweler here last night (I live in Columbus, OH) had a princess he showed me that was 1.06 VS1, G, very good cut, GIA rated that he wanted $7,300. Seemed awful steep, but he has a promo going where he''d give me $500 off, still quite steep vs online. Once I find what I think is a good deal I will definitely submit for everyone''s opinion!

They have a great vendors here on Pricescope. You will find a great diamond here and plenty of help as well.

Good Luck

well, I returned the diamond today. it cost me $48 to send it 2nd day priority w/ insurance of $4000 and a certified mail reciept of delivery. now i need to start shopping for a round. I''m looking for a .90 to a 1.10 round very good cut, G-H, VS2-SI1. Any suggestions on what online vendors to start at? Blue Nile again or anyone else?
Thanks

Try under prices at the top. "search by cut"

I personally wouldn''t go with BN, you''ll get much more, very important information from other vendors.

I second this opinion!!!!

First she wanted a princess, now she wants a round. I would return the princess (depending on the return time limit), and start over and take her shopping a bit more. She might change her mind again. Just tell her she needs to select a shape and setting she likes the best. Then after you''ve shopped enough and she''s sure of what she wants, stop taking her shopping. Don''t even stop anywhere to window shop! Just get the ring and propose.

And I ditto this suggestion as well.

And yes, MarkT is another great vendor.

1. Make sure she''s ABSOLUTELY sure she wants a round.
2. If so, return the princess.
3. Go round shopping...and get her a beautiful ideal cut sparkler.

You have gotten great advice. I would add Wink Jones to the mix of vendors too. We did buy from BN, but that was only because of a severe paucity of well cut stones in the specs we were looking for at the time (and we had been looking for months and months). We knew we had the return policy if needed. Really is much safer to purchase from one of the listed vendors.
I know you already returned it, and I think that was smart. I echo the sentiment to take her shopping A LOT more to determine what shape she really wants before you purchase again. We females can be fickle sometimes! (esp where diamonds are concerned!)
Good luck!
