The "goal" is relative. $1/ct will get them there tomorrow.

Interesting times in the diamond market.

The DeBeers sales numbers are what was expected given how much of their production they shut down, that they managed to still make a profit is the amazing part and shows how high their margins are.

'' Alrosa Aiming for $2 Billion in Rough Diamond Sales

The new president of Alrosa on Monday confirmed that the company intends to meet its goal of $2 billion in rough diamond sales in 2009.''

Will be interesting to see how much of the sales is to the government stockpile and how much is to the market.
Basically the government is giving them a bail out.

Not anymore...., thats why the "former" Alrosa president was ousted!
It looks like Putin wants the stockpile transferred to liquidity..., like you said..., it will be interesting!

True...

An official discount communicated by the Russians is a first..., rare step!

But based on 'not so long ago' experience..., it can be translated to unexpected potential "DANGER"....

Well Storm you seemed on the ball as I just read "....a portion would be purchased by the Gokhran, Russia''s state depository for precious metals."

I am just not sure if that ''portion'' was purchased already in the first half or....

Deflation is the name of the game now.

Until household weath increases and/or credit expands again, we will observe major downward price pressure on all commodities, even diamonds.

both from the idex article:
Despite the unusually large sales the company already made this year to Russia''s state repository Gokhran, Andreyev expects that Alrosa will make some additional sales to it.
