De Beers is going to make lab created diamonds

I read that with interest. Especially as there was a recent lively discussion in RT on this topic. Many of the same points were brought up on consumer confusion between MMDs and other simulants, pricing and market placement. I wonder if NYT writer reads this forum.

I think it is great, I only wish they would make bigger sizes so they are not too small after recutting!

Interesting. Doesn't affect me at my age. I am probably not getting any other diamonds. I would definitely try MMD if the price does come down--for fashion items. I like to at least try everything out there. Maybe my grandkids will be into them as engagement rings. Everything we have now will become retro, vintage, then antique I guess. I won't be around then, lol.:cool2:

I wish I could like MMD. I try. Really I do. I have some cz, but the problem is, I know they are cz. Doesn't matter that no one else may know it. So they can make all they want, it won't change anything for me. I would rather have less than have man made stones.

I can see my son/hopefully future DIL interested in these. I guess its a nice alternative for people that arent really into diamonds/jewelry or the cost
of diamonds.

I just wonder what kind (if any) grading reports you get with the stones? Do you get any angles/depths/table/color/clarity? The sales site
(which isnt set up yet) looks like specific sizes cost a certain amount with no respect to color/clarity or cut. Makes me wonder...I guess we'll
know in Sept.

Do MMD's look different than natural mined? I've never seen one.

I have the same feelings about CZ, but I think they look different. A casual observer might not be able to tell the difference but I can. I even have a well cut CZ (can see hearts & arrows) but it doesn't have the same kind of sparkle as a diamond. It's flat and "plastic-y" to me.

But I thought one couldn't tell the difference at all with MMD?

You would need a microscope (not loupe) to tell the difference. But for some people it can still be a mind clean thing.
Their advertising on these is pretty genius though. They are not offering e-rings, only "fashion" pieces for "every day of the week" kind of thing.

It would definitely be a mind clean kind of thing for me, even if I couldn’t see the difference.

I have a couple colored stones that are unset and I would love some of these lab diamonds to be used as side stones. I would need to take them out of the settings DeBeers will sell them in but that won't be a big issue.

Lisa, I have a project of an antique-like pendant with spinels and I am scared of the amount of melee it might take. I would be all for man-made diamond used as melee, but I am afraid that a totally opposite thing will happen. MMD will be used as melee without disclosing that they are man-made and sold at the price of real diamond melee. Because it is nearly impossible to test melee. So in a way, De Beers will be still making its money. They will be occasionally selling large MMD, but the most $$ will be made where it is impossible to test, on tiny stones.

So if Leonardo Di Caprio starts selling man-made melee, I'd rather buy from him.

P.S. Given the way the world is moving, with colored stones being diffused, coated, irradiated, heated, and what not...I am glad that I never minded inclusions. Now they can be used as "imprint" of the stones.

I am not sure I would buy one of these to wear on me because I prefer natural stones. However. I am curious about what they look like and if the cut is decent. I'm worried since from what I understand, they refuse to grade them. So it makes me think the cut is poop and I can forgive a lot but I don't like poop cuts.
IF it turns out to have a decent cut I would probably consider a tiny one for my daughter as a training necklace. I wouldnt want her to lose anything real and expensive while she is younger and the price of a coloured half or quarter carat isn't too bad.

I expect the cut on these will be intentionally poor. I took a look at their marketing photos and they're not at all trying to show off hearts-and-arrows precision. Seems like they're trying to convince consumers generally that synthetics have to be less-than.

I'll probably price out getting these re-cut for my long awaited studs project. Looks like they plan to release at least a couple pieces with big-enough white diamond centers.

That is my plan too, toss the silver have them recut properly and put them in a nice setting!!
I hope they have some 1 ct stones so not too much will be lost during the recut and polish

They say they plan on 1 ct max but it sure looks to me based on the advertising like they mean tcw not 1 ct centers. Unfortunately.

I saw the coming soon and advertising stuff and was worried about that too.

Lets hope they have some 1 ct solitaires to work with otherwise , with the likely subpar cutting and polishing at that price point, it might not be worth the cost if they will be sticking a .35 ct stone with more poorly cut melee to get to a ctw of 1. :eek-2: Then it will be as they are advertising - junk jewelry... I mean - fashion jewelry

Which is exactly the perception/outcome that De Beers wants!

I heard about that, but if they are only sticking to small sizes, that's disappointing. The reason why I'd want to get a mmd is that it is cheaper and I can rock a big fun stone.

There will be a 1 ct stone in the solitaire ! So the stones are 900$ and will need to be recut, but that is salvagable!
