Hi,
I have a platinum engagement ring. I had an unfortunate accident and fell on steps. Now there are several deep scratch marks on the platinum. First I was shocked. I thought platinum would be more resistant to getting scratched like this second I got worried about the diamond but I don''t see anything with naked eye. Is it possible to fix deep scratches in a platinum setting?
Thanks

i''m no expert on platinum, but i''ve read other ps threads about its propensity to scratch and develop a patina over time. correct me if i''m wrong, but you can take it to the jewelers and have it re-polished and it will look as good as new.

platinum and gold will both scratch and suffer nicks over time. but there is a difference in what actually happens, structurally. for every scratch, you will lose a minute part of the gold metal, whereas in platinum, the metal is simply redistributed (i seem to remember Wink saying this in a presentation, once).

you should take the ring in to your jewelers to be repolished. they should also check the prongs and the stone to make sure there isn''t any other damage to the ring. good luck!

Platinum doesn''t lose metal when it''s scratched, but it is actually MORE malleable than gold. It''s a myth that it''s "stronger" in the sense that it does scratch/dent easier.

The beautiful thing about it though is that unlike gold it doesn''t lose any metal. So just take that baby back to your jeweler, he can polish it, and it''ll look like new.

How are you feeling after that fall? I hope you have recovered

You can always get your ring polished.

Platinum is dense, but soft. Scratches are very common and even somewhat deeper ones can be polished out easily. Just take it to your jeweler and have the ring polished.

Eek, sorry to hear about your spill...are you ok?!

Hello
Thanks everyone for their helpful responses. I will take the ring back to the jeweler and hopefully there isn''t too much damage other then the scratches. I didn''t get hurt too bad (except the painful embarrassment of falling down the steps in the middle of the day).
Thanks again...
