I have been lurking on this forum for about 18 months now. I have to tell you, all of you have been very helpful (thank you). About 2 months ago I purchased a diamond from GOG (1.42 G VS2 ). I purchased with the intention of waiting for a D color VS2 to upgradE to in the 1.3 - 1.4 range. GOOD OLD GOLD /3962 is the 1.42 G. The D VS2 is 1.36 GIA EX/EX/EX. My question is which do you think of this D VS2 and which of the 2 would you chose? THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!

It would help if you included the links.

We would need all the info on both stones to give a thoughtful opinion. Just going by color, clarity and size, my guess is many would tell you, along with me, that a 1.4 G VS2 is a really nice spot for a diamond. All things being equal, I''d personally stick with that. High color isn''t important to me though.

Do you like your G? Do you see any color in it?

If both are well-cut, I would probably keep the G/VS2. It's pretty rare to find nice stones in the 1.4 carat range and personally I still think G is a very white and icey color. I'd save my money and spend it on a wedding band, the setting, or other fun purchase instead.

Hello Jetguy and welcome :)

It sounds as if you have a lovely diamond already. As Ellen asked, are you happy with the G colour which you bought, (as G is already a great colour for a diamond)?

To be honest with you, I think there are very few (if any) on PS, that would have an upgrade to go up in the colour grading of their diamond, whilst retaining the same carat weight, or even moving to a smaller diamond.

Most people, in fact, do the opposite in upgrading to a bigger stone, but actually choosing a diamond of lower colour (and often lower clarity) than their original!

Of course, if you have your heart set on having a D-colour diamond, then you should go ahead and buy the stone that makes you happy. :)

I thought that I would just mention it though, as what you are doing is quite unusual around these parts. My personal inclination would be to keep the G VS2 (which I think is a lovely combination) or, if you are set on upgrading, to choose a stone of the same colour/clarity combination and to go up in carat weight.

That''s just my thoughts though and obviously you need to do whatever makes you happiest! :)

They are either holding the stone for you or it is sold, because I can''t access the D VS2 to look at it. But I agree with the others that a 1.4 is very desirable and I probably would not give it up unless I found a higher color 1.4.

Thank you so much all. Ellen, the G VS2 was one that you recomended to someone on a previous post (maybe january). It was put on hold and reappeared about a week later. I quickly put it on hold because it was something that I knew I would settle on. As you all probably know, a diamond in the 1.3 - 1.5 VS2 - SI1 range is hard to find. I bought the 1.42 G VS2 at GOG and johnathan is holding it for me. Johnathan is an AMAZING person ( SO PASSIONATE ). I am about 60 miles from GOG, so I paid him a visit. The G VS2 was beautiful, but I am very color sensitive. When the G was next to a D, I immediately noticed a huge difference. D was icy white, G a slight tint ( face up and down ). I am getting engaged in AUGUST, so Johnathan is holding my G, while I was waiting for a 1.3-1.5 D VS2 to appear. It has and yes DIAMONDSEEKER I put it on hold. I''m sorry I am rambling so much, it''s just that I want to get the best for my girlfriend ( she deserves it ). It is a 1.36 D VS2, GIA. I can''t seem to pull up the numbers, I will call GOG and post them tommorow. Once again, THANK YOU all so much. You all have no idea how much I have learned and I owe it all to PRICESCOPE!!!

How excitiing JETGUY. Can't wait for your pics. I am a D lover as well.

I recently passed on a 1.22ct/G in favour of a little 1.0ct/D. I keep telling myself good things come in small packages - darn my stupid colour sensitivity (hehe).

I can understand the wanting colourless my BF could have personally got a substantially bigger diamond if I wanted to lower colour and clarity but I chose not to :).

If they are both well cut and similar, I would say definately go for the D if that''s what you truly want for your girlfriend. You sound like you won''t really be satisfied until you get here that D, so I would say go for it now for two reasons, you want to be 110% happy with your purchase, and she may not want to upgrade later for sentimental reasons. I can totally understand the need for a D, my ering stone is a D, and I am colour sensitive, so I was sticking to the D or E colours.

Can''t wait for handshots!!

From your second post it sounds as if you reaaaaaally want a D colour - so I''d say go for it! :)

Good for you!

Congratulations! I was one of the very few who went from an F to an E on my first upgrade and I never looked back. I guess that I am color sensitive, as I always cared more about the (in order of importance) cut, color and clarity before size.

Jonathan at Good Old Gold is a great guy. You will be happy with your purchase.

Best Wishes!!

Thank you all for your responses. I called GOG today and received the specs for the 2 diamonds. Diamond 1 - WWW.GOODOLDGOLD.COM/DIAMOND/3962. 1.42 G VS2 AGS - 7.24 - 7.26mm. TABLE - 56.08, DEPTH - 61.66, CROWN - 34.25, PAVILION - 41.04, GIRDLE - 1.29%, and NO FLOURESENCE. Diamond 2 - WWW.GOODOLDGOLD.COM/DIAMOND/4164. 1.36 D VS2 GIA - 7.09 - 7.13mm. TABLE - 55.9, DEPTH - 61.85, CROWN - 34.58, PAVILION - 40.70, GIRDLE - 2.24%, and NO FLOURESENCE. My question is, how do the 2 diamonds compare to eachother, which of the 2 is better CUT, and most of all what do you think of the 1.36 D VS2? Also, which of the 2 would you chose? Looking forward to all your responses. I especially would like to know what STRM thinks. THANK YOU!

JETGUY, the links aren't working for me.

If you put a D next to a G, almost anyone will see the difference. It's what the G looks like by itself that should be considered the most. A G is a safe way to go for almost any size, unless one is highly sensitive. Do you know if your girl is?

The "best" means different things to different people. To me, it means cut. To you it might mean color, cut, or both. There's no wrong or right here.

I have a 1.40 G, and I honestly see no color. I personally have no desire to go higher. But that's me. If all things are equal in these two stones (and I'd really like to see the links), as I said before, I personally would keep the G.

HI:

I am all for a D color; great desire, but too bad we cannot see the links!!!

cheers--Sharon

TO ACCESS LINKS, YOU HAVE TO DO IT MANUALLY. SORRY, I AM NOT VERY GOOD WITH COMPUTERS.

Yeah, I tried too. I don''t know how to get to them, I''ve done what I can.

ELLEN and all, I thank you for trying. Can you at least look at the numbers I posted. Any help much appreciated.

I can (and did) look at the numbers, and the problem is, either of those combos would work. I "suspect" the G might be an Isee2 by all the specs. If so, I know those are cut extremely well, but, the other one could be too.

It''s really hard to say. If the IS pics look great on both, they are probably both fine and it''s really up to you, and what color you want. The sizes are so close, it wouldn''t be a consideration for me.

Hope that helps.

p.s. If you simply can''t decide, have Jon do it. Let him compare, and pick the best one, if there is one. lol

If Jonathan says they are both beautifully cut then they are both beautifully cut. I'd ask him to film a little video for you of the two stones next to each other in different lighting conditions, that might help you make up your mind, one may just speak to you, regardless of the numbers. He's done this before and it is really cool.

I'd get the G, myself, but I kinda think spending big bucks on a D is silly. BUT THAT"S JUST ME. One thing I learned on PS, which is not commonly accepted off PS it seems, is that color is a completely subjective personal preference. So we can't pick for you!

Get a video made, then ask him to post it so we can all see it too!

ETA: Heck, drive over and see them side by side, I forgot you live nearby. You will know for sure after seeing them.

DD

If you think your girlfriend would rather have a slightly smaller stone with D color over a larger stone of G color, then by all means go for the D. Seriously, these are both ideal, hearts and arrows stones, I assume, so it is simply a matter of choosing the color.

Hi Jet,

Caught your post here. The url''s are case sensitive and you typed them in all caps. Try all lower case and they''ll work fine.

Thank you.

Jon, I tried, that didn''t work either.

Both are very beautiful stones. It sounds like the D wil be more mind-clean for you, so perhaps you should go for the D.

Thanks.

They will both be beautiful, and it''s pretty much splitting hairs. Having said that, I would still pick the G. (if you asked me why, it''s cut tighter)
