Hi all -

I am (unfortunately?) in the process of selecting a new diamond to replace my engagement ring that was lost last month
7.gif
Thankfully we settled with State Farm (though not without a bit of drama- after researching this board I definitely think we will insure the next ring through Chubb, but I digress!) and we decided to pursue an upgrade.

I love cushions, and I love radiants. Well, let me say my original *dream* diamond was an 8x7mm rect mod. brilliant, with that bucket of crushed ice-style faceting. BUT as of late, I have also grown to love cushions - more recently, thanks to all the gorgeous cushions I''ve seen while lurking on this site for the past few weeks. Now I am torn!!!

The store I am working with on this claim is bringing in a few diamonds for me to look at next week. Last week he brought in the "first round" of stones, out of which only one really and truly spoke to me. I can''t stop thinking about this stone!!! And what has me so torn is that it is *so* not what I thought I wanted - it is more of a square cushion and it has that lovely chunky, old-cut style faceting that is the exact opposite of the original radiant I thought I wanted! But like I said, I keep coming back to this stone in my mind, but I am having trouble distinguishing whether it is just the part of me that needs immediate gratification, or if I really just love this stone - if that makes sense!

So, my question for the "experts" - how does this stone look on paper? Any major callouts or concerns from a purely numbers perspective?

2.03 cushion modified brilliant
7.55x7.3x4.71mm
GIA cert
I SI2 (totally eye-clean, the grade-making inclusion is a carbon/crystal combo that is only visible from the pavillion when you loupe the stone, off to the side towards the girdle and not in the center)
Girdle - med to thick, faceted
Depth 64.5
Table 63
Culet - None
Polish/Symmetry/Fluor - G/G/None
Crown angles < 25 degrees (huh?)
Price $9400 (before deducting the claim settlement amount, of course)

Thoughts???

a crown angle <25 degrees is a chipping risk. I''d send it to an appraiser and see if the girdle is thick enough.

Are you able to get a good macro photo of it in diffused natural light?

I don''t know about getting a picture - my digital camera is broken and I don''t know what kind of equipment is available to this store. I hadn''t considered the crown angle being a detriment to the stone - even with a medium-thick girdle?

This is the first time I've ever heard of a stone with CA<25. Do you think it looks really flat/pancake on top?

I'd take it to an appraiser.

This is the first time I've ever heard of a stone with CA<25. With a 63% table, do you think it looks really flat/pancake on top?
That would be my concern as well. Pancake action = not so pretty (unless we're talking about actual pancakes - those, I like)

I know! I tried looking for old posts on here relating to small crown angles and couldn''t find any relating to cushions!

I looked closely at the stone from the side profile - it doesn''t have a OEC/OMG-like high crown at all, obviously - but it doesn''t look flat/pancake-like either. You can definitely see a height difference. Just not as much, I guess?

Wait... this stone has chunky faceting but is listed as a modified brilliant?!

That is the opposite of everything I have ever learned on PS. A cushion brilliant is chunkier than a modified brilliant, which is the crushed ice look you described above.

Confusion! Can you clarify? Is this the right cert (or specs) for this stone?

Sometimes there are ones that defy this rule. I think Rhino posted about one that recently came in as an estate piece. Super chunky, but a modified brilliant. It may still be in the GOG video library.

Aw man, I hate exceptions!
