Is this a good cut? The Halloway Cut advisor says yes, but the cert says "good"? Why is this? Thanks!

The HCA is used to eliminate the dogs. If a stone gets 2 or less it is worth looking at but the HCA shouldn't be the only thing you use. What about the symmetry and polish of this stone?

If you look at the x on the HCA chart you'll notice the X is not within the GIA or AGS outlines. I think it is cut shallow because most stones don't get an excellent for spread. The good ones get 3 excellents and a very good for spread.

This is more of a pendant stone than the ring stone from HCA prediction. This is because stones with this kind of dimensions tends to be more affected by the head shadow of the observer, making it becoming darker as the observer move closer to the stone, throwing his shadow on it.

So, bottom-line, if you are getting it for a pendant go for it, it will be a good deal as the cut is rated less than ideal so you pay less for it. If not, unless you have seen it in person or have the IS/ASET of the stone that says otherwise of it''s optical performance, I would say give it a pass and search for others

To answer your question, GIA cut grades can be broad and you can find a mix of cut combos within each which may or may not perform well. This may be a bright and attractive diamond - the HCA apparently likes such combos and it is by no means poorly cut, but it is a shallower stone which may not have scored so well with GIA cut grading.

when the result come up on HCA page, click the explanation under neath and read all abaout it
