I live in Canada and am planning to purchase a SimonG ring from a U.S. vendor. This vendor has a "trade-in" policy. I have been liaising with them and have arranged to trade a diamond band that I never wear to off-set the cost of the new purchase. My question is this: Even if I mark my ring as a ''gift'' when I ship it out, will the US vendor incur any taxes or duties when they receive my ''trade-in'' ring? Is there a way of ensuring that this doesn''t happen. Otherwise, it might not be worthwhile.

You need to ask the vendor. However, I live in the US and ship items to Canada all the time (I used to live there), Canada charges all sorts of crazy duty and taxes but the US doesnt. My mom ships me items all the time, and has sent me several large packages and once a computer when I moved. They never charged a cent. So you should be fine. Just make sure its insured and you can check out the US government website on taxing, but since this is a personal transaction they shouldnt do anything. However, be sure when the person in the US ships it back to Canada that YOU do not end up paying any taxes and such on it. That should be the bigger concern. I''ve marked items as gifts but they still charge if the declared value is over a certain amount.

hope that helps.

Well, I've shipped jewellery to the US (not from Canada but I don't think it makes any difference here), both to return an item I wanted to upgrade and also to sell a few other items. No tax or duty was ever charged/ paid.

Sorry for the threadjack, are you able to share who this vendor is? I've got far too many items that I don't wear and would love to trade them in for something else. Thanks.
