hello everyone,

This post is regarding programs used for custom settings. I am currently speaking with a prospective custom platinumsmith and I asked him what programs he uses for designs. He told me he uses Gem Vision and Image Dome, I was wondering if these are comparable to CAD as that is the only program I have seen here on PS. Another question is regarding a solder. He told me he uses a 1800 platinum weld seamless solder...what is that? I am not familiar with solders and I am just curious what that is. Also, he mentioned that when it comes down to the finished pieces he uses CAD-cam, is that the same thing as CAD that has been mentioned on this forum? Thanks for all replies!

Jason

ps. i will prob be getting a custom setting with plat and ruthenium

We use ArtCam jewelsmith and it by all accounts and research was the best out there.

The CAM part of CAD-CAM stands for computer aided manufacturing. When a three dimensional sculpted part like a ring is designed in CAD, it is then output to CAM software, which writes the code that drives a computer driven machine, called a CNC machine. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, and they utilize a special set of commands called G-Code. There are functions to turn the spindle on, cut lines and arcs from one set of coordinates to another, and other specialized functions in G-Code. I use several CNC machines in my daily work, but usually hand write my programs because my parts are simpler. Fancy shapes like a class ring would take CAM output to be efficient. It generally uses a series of thousands of tiny three dimensional lines in combination with a computer controlled milling machine with a rotary axis to make something like that in wax. The wax master is used for casting precious metal parts.

The Image Dome is a photographic dome, which has lights, reflective walls, and a camera. I have one of those. As I understand it, Gemvision is the name of the company, and Matrix is the design software.
