Hello everyone. I am taking the plunge and finally having a custom e-ring and wedding ring made for me (gulp)!! This is a very scary thing since I have never designed anything, yet I''m very picky about my jewelry. Having faith in my own vision and feeling confident in someone else''s ability to interpret my ideas is making me pretty nervous.

I have a couple of questions regarding selection of side stones. My center diamond is a 2.07 ct, E color, eye-clean SI2, pear cut. I will be selecting a matched pair of pear shaped side stones in the 0.35 to 0.50 ct each range.

* How important is it that the side diamonds also be certified? I know that fancy shapes cannot be judged purely by the numbers. My jeweler has two pairs of matched pears for me to see next week. They are not certified, and based on the numbers alone, they would not be what I consider "ideal" pears (one pair are 6.25x4.25x2.3 mm and the other pair are 6.30x4.4x2.9 mm). He claims they are beautiful and will visually match my center stone.

* Based on the AGA cut grade charts and rules, my center stone is a 2B because of its 66% depth. When selecting a complimentary pair of pear side stones, should I be looking at cut grades (based on the numbers) in the same range as my center stone or let my own eyes (with loupe and ideal-scope in hand) be the judge as to how well they "match" the center?

* The length-width ratio of my center stone is 1.67:1. I tend to prefer a slightly fatter pear. Would using side pears of a different ratio detract from the ovrall appearance of the ring?

Thanks in advance for your help. Making decisions on my own setting/diamonds has proven to be significantly more difficult that assisting others.

I would view the two pears your jeweler has and go from there. Personally if they look good, I wouldn't worry if they were certified or not. Hopefully more people here at PS who post frequently will have more answers to your questions.
