I ordered a custom enagagement ring and wedding band set from a jeweler. It's made in platinum.
A few days after I got it, I took the ring to another jeweler and they said the size is 5.0

I ordered a 5.5. Soooo frustrated!!! After 8 weeks of waiting, this jeweler messed up the ring size.
I called jeweler who made it and they are willing to resize ring for free, but I'm worried about how this will affect quality of the ring.

Will they stretch the existing ring thus making it thinner? Will they add more platinum ? I feel resizing up reduces quality of the ring in some way.

I paid for a 5.5 size platinum custom ring. Should I ask them to remake the entire ring or settle for a resize?

What kind of ring is it? A solitaire? Pave down half the shank? Pave eternity shank.

.

Having had many rings from different jewelers. I feel that their sizing can be off as much as 1/2. If your ring is pretty plain shank on the bottom, resizing it 1/2 is not a big deal and you won't even notice it. I've had rings sized down by 2 1/2 size and I couldn't even tell, depending on what is on the shank. Relax... take a deep breath, resizing is so common, and your ring size will fluctuate through out the years, so don't sweat the resizing... unless its a full eternity and to some extent can be shaven down on the inside of the shank but not much.

It's not solitare, it's got diamonds in both ring and band.

There are 11 diamonds on the band and 10 on the ring.

And I'm worried because it's UP sizing, not down sizing.

I wouldn't be as worried about downsizing, but making it bigger would involve either adding more platinum or stretching existing ring and that has me worried.

Any suggestions?

Get it sized. Sounds like the diamonds don't go more than half way down the shank? Is that right?

Tell them to size it by adding more plat. If there's an issue after sizing then have them remake it.

Yes, diamonds stop halfway. And yes, I will ask them to size by adding more platinum.

But the question is, does upsizing degrade the quality ?
I paid them to custom make this ring in 5.5. They made a mistake and made it 5.0.
I shouldn't have to pay for their mistake. But, I'm willing to accept a resizing, if I get the impression from you experts, that resizing UP will not degrade the ring quality.

If it does lower quality, I will simply ask them to re cast it or ask for refund.

I have several platinum rings in size 6 and they all are slightly different in size. The sizing poles used by jewelers are not 100% consistent. I would not worry about sizing a ring up or down a half size.

I have had this issue as well with different jewelers telling me things are one size but they seem 1/4 of a size off when compared to another custom ring in the "same" size. frustrating-sorry! Hopefully the jeweler will take pride and make it just right for you...from what I have read in resizing platinum, they always have to add plat to go bigger and they cant stretch it the way they would with gold. So hopefully, they do a stellar job and it fits you beautifully.

I'm speechless.

I got the rings back. The width of the engagement ring has changed, its pinched in thinner at the bottom.

the wedding band also doesn't seem to fit flush with the E. ring anymore...almost like the proportions are off..

:( very very disappointed in robbins brothers montclair... Been 10 weeks now since I put in my order.

Now, they are saying they will re-make the entire ring for me in the correct size, will take another 2 weeks :(

I was planning to propose next week...... :wall:

So sorry, how frustrating!
