A young lady that I work with is considering having a ring made for and Asscher cut stone that she presently owns. She likes the idea of using baguettes around the Asscher as a halo for the ring. I told her that she would probably have to have the baguettes custom cut for her ring to accomodate the Asscher.

Has anyone here ever had baguettes custom cut for a ring that they had made? If so, what was the premium /cost for having baguettes cut for there project?

I haven''t had it done, but I DID get a quote for a ring for my asscher sapphire that was just as you''d describe. It was insane. And the overwhelming cost was the cutting/setting of the baguettes.

as neatfreak said...it''s very expensive...

maybe Gypsy will see this post.

Custom-cutting and fitting baguettes in a halo-style ring is a lot more work than using round brilliant diamonds for the halo - however only your friend can decide whether the cost is worth it for her. If she likes colour and wants to reduce cost but still have that style then she might also consider using sapphires or rubies instead of diamonds for the custom cutting - here is an example of a ring with custom-cut sapphires to illustrate how these could look

A significant part of the cost of such a project is the labour..., and I am afraid that if you want a good job..., there is not much cost reducing using other materials.

But again..., its greatly depends on the standard of quality work you require or expect...

Agreed that the labour costs are the main part - as non-one of us who do quality work can reduce labour costs - the only option I could suggest on small cost reduction was coloured gems.
In the case of the picture of the ring I posted - that was the dream design for a client and they wanted that style and nothing else would have substituted her dream style.

The main reason this would be cheaper is that it is made up of multiple smaller stones.
You could do the same thing with diamonds and its less than larger custom cut baguettes that run the whole length with 1 stone.
In general only the corner stones would have to be custom cut making it much less expensive.

Going with single stone per side top color natural ruby would be more expensive than using diamonds for the same.
But multiple smaller stones would be cheaper.
multiple small sapphire as show in the picture would be the lowest cost option.

synthetics are often used for this lowering the cost further and making it easier to find/make a matched set.
