My jeweler tells me the setting has to be double prong on my cushion. I don''t like this setting. Are they correct? Just lazy? Thanks for any input!

Nope. You can do single or double prongs on cushion diamonds. What setting are you looking at? Some settings (the basket) are made only for double prongs.

i''ve seen tons of cushions set with single prongs, assuming this is what you mean by the prongs. scvr''s Leon Mege ring is over in the show me the ring folder right now..

cushion and single prong Leon solitiare:

It''s similar to this setting:

I don''t like how thick these prongs are. The diamond is just 1.3 carats and seems like it should have smaller prongs.

The basket on the earring settings show that it must have double prongs because of the way it was built. If your ring''s basket is similiar, then, it has to use double prongs as well. If you want single prongs instead, I''d suggest looking for a different setting because it can''t be modified.

Sorry, I know I''m not being clear. It''s not a basket but rather a simple four prong Tiffany style or knife edge style, coming up from the band. I can''t get a pic as I''m at work and can''t find a similar prong online.

So a cushion can be set pretty much in any prong?

You bet. A cushion can be set in any single prong setting.

Thanks, Chrono. I feel better prepared to go back tomorrow!

Okay, so the jeweler still says it either has to be double prong or a basket setting with single prongs. From what I''ve seen this is just not true. Seems like the jeweler just has a preference. Any suggestions? I''m so frustrated. Unfortunately, there is no way to get the money back, just store credit. Help!

I''m sorry to hear that your jeweler is being difficult, perhaps you could bring in pictures of cushions set in similar styles as what you''re looking for.

Mine is a cushion set in a shared prong eternity band with 4 plain old prongs:

And I love it! Good luck, perhaps some images will sway your jeweler''s mind.

I''m no expert, just a consumer but it is my understanding that the double prongs are really for aesthetic purposes and don''t really make much of a difference security wise. Does your jeweler carry any designer settings you like that you could get the designer to set the stone for you? if not, maybe just use the store credit for something else and purchase the e-ring setting elsewhere.
