Hi,

Any help is appreciated. I''ve just been doing internet reading and am currently considering a couple of cushions. I have little experience of seeing diamonds (other than pictures and videos).

This stone below I will see Thursday

Carat 1.21
Clarity VVS2
Colour H
6.58 x 5.69 x 3.96
Ratio 1.16
Depth 69.6%
Table 71%
Polish/Symmetry VG/VG
£3,000

That''s all the info I have on this stone until I see it. I''m worried the table is too big.

The other stone I am considering I have seen on the internet only, but can''t see it without committing somewhat. Deposit that I lose some of if I don''t eventually buy some stone from them...or buy and refund, which is hassle.
EGL Cert.
Carat 1.20
Clarity VS1
Colour G
Cut VG
6.10 x 5.71 x 3.92
Ratio 1.07
Depth 68.7%
Table 58%
Polish/Symmetry VG/VG
Girdle Slightly Thick
£2,838

This stone is slightly cheaper, however on paper to me I think it''s better (?). I am slightly worried though as watching some good old gold videos has put me off the crushed ice/watery type look, preferring something slightly chunkier. However I have not seen the facet plot for this stone anywhere (I have attached). Does anyone have any insight as to maybe the potential look of this stone and advice as to which is better?

I have checked:

Thanks

Which lab graded the first stone?

EGL is considered a 2nd tier lab compared to GIA/AGS, their color and clarity grading can be off by 2 grades and thus the stones graded by them are discounted in trade.

Unfortunately the information on the first stone was relayed to me from a friend trader, I''ll find out on Thursday. I''m in the UK tho, not sure if that increases the likelihood of an EGL cert.

Anything else seem amiss tho? Need pictures really...I wished all internet stores had videos for their stones.

Hey ljb,

The facet plot is somewhat helpful but not entirely conclusive.

The amount of facets shown on the pavilion indicates a splintery appearance. Whether that translates to what I consider a "crushed ice" appearance would depend on the proportions and the length of the lower half facets of the diamond which are lacking on lab reports. A photograph of the diamond will either confirm a broad or splintery facet structure but only other tools such as ASET/IdealScope/DiamXray would reveal more about its actual light performance (ie. brightness, fire, patterned and sparkle scintillation). I too share the skepticism expressed by those who echo that about the EGL report. I''d have a more conservative pro take a critical look at this before pulling the trigger unless of course your primary concern is just that its a basic cushion shape which it is.

Regards,
