I''m a long time lurker and occasional poster, however, I''m not posting under my usual login name because some of my potential jewelers might frequent this forum.

I''m in the market for...
Cut: Cushion
Weight: 1.8--2.1
Color: D--F
Clarity: VS2 or Better
Measurements: 1.1--1.2 Ratio
Fluorescence: None

Based upon the online dealers, that roughly puts me in the $18k--$25k range for the stone alone, right?

Here''s the type of setting I''d like:

http://www.estatediamondjewelry.com/images/Ring_5.03ct_3540.jpg

That probably has roughly 1.75 carats of brilliants in the micropave alone. Everyone to whom I''ve showed that picture says I''d need to get it custom made. I was originally thinking of doing a bezel set with a micropave halo, like this, but I think that would obscure too much of the stone. Agreed?

Comments/questions on my requirements?

What follows is the tricky part...

I live in Philadelphia, so I am very fortunate in that I have many jewelers from which to choose. Even more fortunate, I''ve distant cousins in the business. My cousins have generously offered to `flip'' me a stone at wholesale. The downside is that I need a custom setting, and they don''t have an in-house jeweler. Therefore, they''d have to have the stone sent to NYC for a wax to be made. That''s not a problem, but it''s not all in-house, so the extra price might outweigh the wholesale advantage. The other disadvantage of going with my relatives is that they don''t stock cushions, so every stone in which I''m interested needs to be overnighted down from NYC (and I''d have to reimburse them for the shipping costs). I don''t think I could buy just the stone from them, since I''m betting they still want to make a small profit off of me (and it might offend them that I would rather take their stone to a different jeweler to be set).

Here''s an example of what my relatives can get me:

$21,500
2.10 carat, F, VS1, No Fluor, 56% Table, 68.2% Depth, VG Polish, G Symmetry, 7.53 x 7.32 x 4.99 mm

They haven''t yet given me a real quote on the setting, but they estimated that it would cost around $3500 (for platinum). I don''t think that price includes the pave stones.

As a comparison, what follows is a quote for a package deal from one of the big jewelers in Philly:

$25,959
2.02 carat, F, VS2, No Fluor, 64% Table, 66.1% Depth, G Polish, G Symmetry, 8.27 x 6.94 x 4.59 mm
Custom platinum setting
1.75 carats of round brilliant stones for the micropave

They said that $6500 of the $25,959 was for the custom setting, which seems a bit high. They are doing everything in-house, though, so they could very well just be flipping me the stone wholesale and making the profit on the setting. Their break-down of the package deal might also have been a marketing ploy, for all I know.

All-in-all, the package deal seems pretty good. The table might be a bit big on that stone, though. What do you think?

If all things were equal, I''d rather do business with my family.

Any suggestions? Are these prices sane?
