Hey everyone,
I''ve been looking at Cushion cuts and Just want to get your opinion on something. What''s the difference between a Brilliant and a Modified brilliant Cushion? They both seam to be as brilliant to the eye but is there traditionally a "better" cut?

Thanks for your help!!

No, both can be cut very well or very badly.

This depends on the indivudual stone itself. Just as there are good and bad rounds, there are good and bad cushions, be it brilliang or modified brillaint.

I agree with the above posters. I actually have a cushion brilliant, however I have seen the exact same plot called a modified brilliant on other GIA certs too??? So I just based my decision on HOW I felt about what the diamond looked like in person. I''ve seen modified brilliants that look amazing too so it just depends on each individual stone :) Good Luck!

Ditto. Cushions are tricky to describe and each is wonderfully unique. Don''t base your opinion upon how the report describes the shape of any given stone... let the individual diamond tell you whether it is "better" for YOU compared to others you are judging.

Thanks everyone! Very Helpful Now I just need to understand how the measurement of a diamond effects it''s sparkle/scintillation or is good enough just picking an ideal or excellent cut?

With cushions it''s so important to go by images and expert''s opinions than just numbers alone. I would suggest contacting mark at engagementringsdirect or Jon at goodoldgold.com. They have pulled some beautiful cushions and would be very helpful to you rather than just you searching on your own.

Although this isn''t *always* the case, often modificed cushion brilliants have a more crushed ice appearance than cushion brilliants... Both are fine, but can be very different in appearance. You should view some videos of cushions from goodoldgold.com and get an idea of what style cushion you like the look of.

Thanks kcoursolle,
I wrote Mark an e-mail today. Unfortunately his site is really messed up? Every time I go there my computer freaks out about his site containing Viruses and Worms??? and I always have to disconnect. Hopefully he will respond soon!...Thanks again!

Yes, it''s best just to contact him instead of going through his site. His site also doesn''t have the best diamond search, but his eye for choosing nice cushions is fantastic! My anti-virus popped up after going to his site as well, but luckily sophos didn''t find anything. Hopefully this is something he can get worked out.
