Cushion cut thoughts - 2 carat vs. 1.71 carat

i recently looked at a 1.71 c Cushion, F color, VS2, VG/G, 69 depth, 56 table, no flourescence, no culet. It seemed like a pretty incredible cut although I didn''t have time to look under an idealscope so no idea how the stone would do there. This one was 12,700. I''ve looked at a few 2 carat stones - nothing spectacular - dimensions aren''t great - low to mid 60s depths, high 50s tables - generally running 17 to 18K - but no real bling factor.

The stones obviously skyrocket a pretty fair amount once they hit that magical 2 carat point - and I''m finding I may have to shell out 22 to 23K at least - to get something that really impresses me. It''s really tough to judge a cushion on paper but I''ve found some on Blue Nile w/ E/E and very good cuts but with some flourescene and medium culets. I can''t imagine they''d ask 21K for a stone that had issues b/c of a medium culet but everyone''s opinions on the culet vary so much.

So my questions:
* Is it worth the extra cost to go over 2 carats? I know that''s a "well, what do you want" type of question - but 2 carats is a kind of magic number. Am I just not looking in the right places - should I be able to get a rockin'' stone for 17 to 18K?
* Any all encompassing thoughts on what a cushion culet should be? How much do those medium to large culets affect the look of a rock?

Contact a few vendors, not too many you dont want to waste peoples times. But ask them what they can find for you in your price range. If the stone does not strike you as fantastic do not buy it. It is much more appealing to a girl to have a better cut smaller stone the a larger less attractive one. JMO.

mistermer- I'm sure you'll find a fabulous cushion...

I just wanted to throw in there that I don't think opinion varies on the issue of the medium culet. that is not a problem for the stone and your eyes won't even notice it.
 
Thanks for the comments. I''ve been looking for several months and, for example, have gone to the AGA site, which doesn''t reference cushions at all. Most of the sellers/cutters I''ve spoken to have essentially said - cushions are tough to nail down on paper - you''ll have a general sense of what''s a good stone, but the diamonds in the rough, as it were, you have to see in person.

So I''ve looked a lot on the Internet - it''s rare that I see an Ex/Ex Polish, Symmetry, but when I do, other things seem a bit off, Flourescence or the culet, the general dimensions. But I don''t have much to go on - nothing on AGA that says - here''s where a truly fantastic or very good cushion would be. The 1.71 I looked at had a 69 depth, 56 table - was really brilliant - but looking into the stone - it was "busy", not uniform like an ideal square/H&A from GOG. I saw another - a 1.78 G - that had almost identical stats - w/ size and such, a little more square, Ex/Ex - was very uniform - and cost $3500 more. It clearly had a fantastic cut, but that''s not something I''d ever see on paper.

It''s tough to look at a web site and really get a sense for that. Maybe I just need a little more general education. But I fear I''m making this whole thing way more complex than it should be. My girlfriend''s extraordinary, I''m ready to ask the question, I just want to get this part of it right and it''s proven to be a bear. :)
 
Again mistermer, a medium culet does not mean a stone is "off"... although you might be able to see a large...not sure...And as for flourescence, there is nothing off about that either...if it's not strong, don't give it a second thought. Period. If it's a colorless stone with strong flourescence, then you would ask the vendor to confirm there is no impact on the stone.

. Thanks Mrs.! I look at Blue Nile every friday waiting for an upgrade stone to pop up! Of course, I'll have to rob a bank to get it...but I look all the time! :) Your god (lol edited...to funny but I'll leave it. I meant dog...cracks me up!!!

EDITED AGAIN.... I see up top that mistermer actually saw a beautiful stone at a good price!!! If your eyes loved it, forget the #s and go with it!!!

If you liked what you saw - go for it! Like MMM said, trust your eyes! Nothing wrong with fluor, unless it is very strong, in fact some people like fluor!

I think that spread is also an important factor to consider. A 2ct stone may have a smaller spread than a 1,7ct stone. The depth and girdle thickness play a role with the spread. The deeper the stone and the thicker the girdle the smaller it will face up. (Spread = L x W)

Do a search on the PS database, as well as the archives and see what a good spread would be for a 2 carat cushion.

remember also that vendors do not always list their entire inventory on their internet database. Sometimes they will have a "gem" that is not listed at all!
