Cushion cut - solitaire

I have recently acquired a 1.52 F cushion cut (modified brilliant w/o crushed ice); 1.09 ratio... and the time has come to put it in a ring.

Is it just me, or is it very rare to find cushions set as solitaire stones in plain bands? Even the Tiffany Novo has some sort of channel setting/pave around the top of the ring. And the craze at the moment is for halos and/or pave around the band.

We were thinking of putting a tapered baguette on each side, but the stone is so great and we don't want to detract from it in any way by adding unecessary detail.

So my question is: has anyone seen an absolutely plain solitaire cushion setting? Is there any reason that (unlike rounds) these are quite uncommon?

I would say that cushions are often placed in halos because it just enhances shape of the stone and there is a nice contrast between the round melee and the cushion. I don't love the idea tapered baguettes with a modern cushion, but I would say to do whatever you think you will like best! The side baguettes do make it harder to find a wedding band, though.

Personal preference. Some want a halo to accentuate the shape, make it look bigger, etc. Nothing wrong at all with a solitaire cushion ring.

Hi Horatio,

I saw a few gorgeous cushion cut solitaire rings in Hatton Gardens a few days ago and I must say they were very, very beautiful. I took some pictures of one of the rings, but they are not the best. Saying that, I also tried on a cushion cut ring that had these side baguette and I must say it was absolutely beautiful too. The jeweller said to me that the baguettes can get dirty very quickly and that is the only minus to baguettes. The cushion cut with baguettes was made by Van Kleef & Arpels and it was a very expensive ring, but absolutely gorgeous.
The jeweller I spoke to about the cushion cut ring options strongly recommended baguettes as it really gives a ring a different look. Saying that I think I will go with plain solitaire as in the future I can add a diamond wedding band any way.

I have a short amateur video of the cushion cut solitaire if you are interested. The ring on the video is rather expensive though, but shows that cushion cut solitaire can look amazing.

Best of luck

Love that solitaire!

At the moment, we're leaning towards a solitaire stone (i.e. no side stones); however, with a diamond pave band (but no halo). We're using a creative jeweller, so will play around with various designs before deciding.

I tried on a few solitaire rings with a diamond pave band and they were all gorgeous, but I personally think that you should have a bigger main stone to have a diamond pave band. Also living in UK I would be too scared to wear a ring that looks very expensive and the rings that have a diamond pave band tend to look really exclusive.

What about the split shank diamond pave band, I find those very pretty. I have seen many beautiful ones on this site, but haven't found anything as pretty in person.

I can't wait to see your ring once it is ready though.
