Just wondering what some of the experts thought about this: (basically if the price is ok)

E
VS1
Cushion Brilliant
7.53 x 7.25 x 4.97
VG/G
no fluorescence
no culet
girdle- thin-very thick
depth% 68.6
table % 68

$23300

Is this an ok price?

And the carat weight would be?

Oh sorry!...probably important. 2.00 carat

Also, if the GIA is dated in 2007, does that mean it is safe from the "Certifigate" scandal? Thanks for any and all help.

I plugged those specs into the "Pricescope your diamond" boxes at the top of the page and it brought up one stone (listed on three sites) in the $21K range, so the price isn''t totally out there in left field, but that wasn''t really a useful comparison...

Have you seen the stone in person or do you have a photo you can post? I say that because the table is on the larger end of the spectrum for most of the cushions that we come across.

I did see it in person and thought it was a great looking stone. I liked the facet pattern better than the cushion modified brilliants. The other big issue was that i was looking for a l/w of under 1.05 because I am attempting to have a legacy ornate replica made. That being said, most of the stones that people quoted me on were in the 24k range. I had an f vvs2 quoted to me at 23,750 but i decided to go with the better color and lower clarity. BTW, the f was a vg/vg also which i know makes a difference but it was a modified cushion so I didnt like the pattern as much. Unfortunatley no pics but I am just trying to make sure I dont get ripped off. I know this is subjective but I just want to feel ok about the purchase if I make it. Thanks again for your response

If you really love the stone, I''d say you are in the ballpark for a large cushion with nice cutting in the current market for stones above 1.5ct.

However, a couple of issues I''ll raise since you haven''t purchased yet.

1) Have you seen cushion brilliants with smaller tables? It is certainly possible that a cushion with a table that large is beautiful, but I would be more comfortable if you had at least compared it to a similar stone with a table below 60%.

2) The depth is taking away some of the spread, but you don''t buy cushions for spread anyways and I wouldn''t recommend a cushion that was too much shallower than the one you picked out.

I also saw the whiteflash stone that is $18k and change and it looks like it has similar stats but I cant view the gia so I dont know if it is cushion brilliant or modified brilliant. Hard to tell.

Thanks boston_jeff, i took the large table into consideration, the reason I did not go below 60 is because I looked at the legacies in the tiffany store and they used tables of 64-66 so I thought that this larger table might be a function of getting the setting to look right. What do you think?

I agree that the few Legacy''s I have seen (mostly in print) tend to have a lower profile with larger tables and shallower crown heights. But that might just be my imagination.

However, I really would not let the setting dictate you diamond purchase. First, the diamond is a much bigger expense, and you should not make many diamond decisions (other than shape) based on your planned setting. Second, it is much easier to modify the setting to the diamond than vice versa. You are much better getting the best diamond you can and than worrying about any necessary setting modifications, if necessary. Essentially, all other things being equal, the better stone will look better in the same setting.

Lastly, and most importantly, I cannot imagine why the Legacy-style would actually look better with a stone with a larger table and a shallower crown-height. If you love this stone, that is a different story, and you should get it. If you are making any sacrifices with the stone in order to match the stats you have seen on stones at Tiffany''s, I think that would be a mistake. I think a stone with a smaller table and nice crown height would look fantastic in a Legacy setting. My $.02.

Thanks for the advice, I will certainly take that into consideration. But all in all, if I like the stone, can I feel that I paid a fair price? (if you can ever consider 23k a fair price for anything that small :))

Hi kush,

Did you see this thread: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/tiffany-diamond-legacy-on-signed-pieces.81892/ that talks about table sizes on the Legacy cushions? If the stone you''re looking at has that feeling of a step-cut/cushion cut hybrid appearance, then that would explain the larger table on your stone. Is the cushion in question a Criss-cut by any chance?

Would love to see pics! Sounds like it''s going to be a fun project for you and one that your FI will definitely appreciate!

Hey Pixley, the crisscut was the closest thing that I saw to the facet pattern of the tiffany but they dont sell the stone loose and the cheapest e vs1 ring that I was quoted was 37k so I had to decide between a cushion modified brilliant or the cushion brillinat. I went with the cushion brilliant because it had larger facets (even thought the modifieds had more "fire", I don''t love the crushed ice look). So that has been my journey so far. I think I am going to finalize the stone on tuesday and bring it to the caster to start the setting. Hopefully it comes out nice. I will definitely post pictures if it comes out the way I want. I am planning on proposing may 10 and have been looking for stones for a long time so my blood pressure has reached an all time high, so I just need to make a purchase and live with my decision. Thank you guys for your support

I feel your pain. I am thoroughly convinced my diamond search resulted in (or, at the very least, prolonged a wicked bout of pneumonia over the holidays). It sounds like you've done loads of research and have seen enough to know what looks good and what doesn't, so that's all that matters. Good luck, have fun and post pictures of that big beauty once you've had it set.

If you're having any doubts surrounding your purchase, I would highly recommend getting an independent appraisal - and letting your vendor know that you intend to do so. It's just peace of mind for such a monumental purchase... I don't know what part of the country you are in, but if I were in the U.S., I would send my stone to Neil Beatty (he's a frequent contributor to this forum - very thoughtful and well-respected on PS), and I would trust him completely to give a very fair and thorough pre-purchase appraisal. Just something to consider.

I am always impressed at the lengths that the men on this forum go to to get their sweeties their dream rings. My DH, bless his heart, handed me a budget number and told me to have at it. He did however tell me not to settle for anything less than exactly what a wanted, and that was pretty good advice, but he came out of the whole thing relatively unscathed and blood pressure intact.

Pixley, great idea. What are the general guidelines for this. Should my stone appraise for higher than I paid or is the price fair as long as it is equal or better? thanks again for the advice

I wanna see a picture!!

I know! I wanna see a picture too!

Regarding the appraisal, here''s a link to a thread that Neil Beatty initiated regarding the appraisal process: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/getting-the-most-out-of-your-jewelry-appraisal.19367/

What I would essentially want is a new purchase or pre-purchase appraisal (if your vendor is willing to send it directly to the appraiser before purchase, even better!) to verify that the stone matches the specs on its cert and to get an idea as to the craftsmanship, cut quality, etc. If you have more questions about the process, post a question and Neil or Dave Atlas will likely reply.

I wish I would have read up on the appraisal process before I went to my local appraiser, since he and I were on different wavelengths regarding my intent for the appraisal, but I live on a little island in Canada and that''s another story. I wouldn''t want an inflated appraisal value. Have a discussion about what you want to get out of the appraisal with whomever is doing it, and that will set you off on the right track.

Hey pixley, I think I made an executive decision, I think I am going to use GOG to get my stone, they seem to really have it together. Just one question (to everyone), GOG prices are slightly higher than RAP and I am generally used to getting a discount on RAP, any thoughts on this? I just love their policies and the amount of info they provide so for such a big purchase, I want to be comfortable. Thanks again

Kush I just read through your thread and I think the decision to go with GOG is a great one. I also have seen that their prices can be slightly higher than some other vendors, but their level of service, particulalry if you are buying over the internet and want to see your stone first, is unparalleled. For example, they will film a video of a number of rocks next to each other and then let you pick, whereas ERD (also a great online vendor for cushions, have you see nthem?) are notorious for giving people really poor pictures of their stones... you an trust ERD to pick good stones, but you need a little more trust. So there is that piece of mind. Plus the 100% trade up at GOG is nice, although other places have that too.

I read something recently on here about RAP that might help you out, but I don't recall where I saw it, you should try a search to see what the experts say about pricing and RAPs.

I think that's a great decision. One thing to remember about the RAP is that it doesn't really reflect cut quality/symmetry and polish, which can influence the pricing not to mention the beauty of a diamond. The stones that qualify for GOG's lifetime guarantee are usually EX/EX or very close to it (EX/VG), so they'll command a slight premium over ones that are VG/G. That, combined with all the additional services they provide, is justification enough for the slightly higher prices, but I definitely think it's worth it. Are you in NYC or can you make a trip out to Long Island to see GOG? Ditto dreamerdaschie's advice regarding Mark T at Engagement Rings Direct - he really excels at finding fab cushions (just take a look at Scarlet16's, Dodgers! and CrookedRock's new antique style cushions - not to mention Boston_Jeff's) but the photos he sends are pretty hilarious. Those newly cut antique cushions may give you that Legacy feeling you're after.

What exactly should the depth and table be on a cushion?? I want a rectangular one so the length/width should be greater than 1.15?? Is that correct? I have just started looking and definitely don''t know much.
Thanks

Hi pharmgirl10: You might want to have a look at this recent thread regarding depth and table percentages for cushions: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/education-on-cushion-cut-wanted.81814/

And yes, 1.15 and up will give you a rectangular cushion. You can probably go down to 1.14 if you want to.
