I like lower colors in antique cushions or newly cut antique cushions such as AVC's at Good Old Gold. I would not like a lower color in a modern cushion. H or I color would be my limit on a modern cushion.
I think it depends on the tint and base hue of the diamond if you want a yellow one and it is a very pale yellow then it looks good to your eyes, if you want a pinky brown one and it has that sort of tint and you like it also fine. If you want something that will look white on your hand, this won't be it and there are a lot of yuck shades in between so its a matter of finding something you like that you can live with. Antique or old cuts generally are more suited to that mid to low colour range, having said that there are some stunning modern cuts that are certain tints in that range as well.
I have an AVC that is a P. I think of it as a colored stone. I had it set in RG to compliment the color, and to my eye it does.
I really like my ring, but if I had an expectation of a white diamond for an e-ring, I don't think the lower colors would work for me. I think some people go down in color to get the size they want and then wrestle with the tint. Pictures are great, but you need to see the stone in various lighting conditions, with different metals and with your skin.
Can I ask what your project is?
Nobody can give you a objective answer to a subjective question. Head over to the local store and get them to show you some lower colored stones in person and compare them to higher colored diamonds.
