So, I had it all figured out. I knew about the 4 C''s. I knew my budget. I was ready to go. Our company has a corporate discount program. One of the merchants is BN. While checking them out, I found this place.

...

Do you people have any idea how badly you have ruined my day? Now I have to learn about crown, pavilion, HCA, Ideal-scope, RBIs, WHiP, ERA, Batting average....wait. Those last few might be from my Fantasy Baseball league.

Anyway, thought I would say hello before I go off reading. You know, soften you guys up before I come back with a BARRAGE of questions.

I hate the internet...

Welcome to PS.

Just buy an AGS 0 or one of their Signature Ideals.

You don't even have to learn anything if you don't want to/are too busy. Just post the link to the BN stone.

But what fun is THAT?

Just think, good sir, on how your selfless determination to educate yourself on diamonds will benefit your pool of male peers as you learn the knowledge that will save them from getting ripped off buying overpriced garbage from mall stores.

I salute you.

Edit: and your girl will wind up with a kick-ass sparklie. Well done.

Lol!! Welcome! It is good to research and understand a bit about what you are buying, so just shout once you have your BARRAGE of questions ready!

You probably do need to stick to AGS0 or Signature Ideal to start, or else you will waste an awful lot of time.

Here''s a cheat sheet of the most commonly preferred specs if you look at GIA stones especially (since with AGS you know to go for 000):

table: 54-57

depth: 60-62

crown angle: 34-35

pavilion angle: 40.6-41.0

girdle: thin, medium, slightly thick

Thanks for the welcome!

I have also found out that our corporate discount does not apply to engagement rings. So, I am now looking at the JA H&A cut. Specifically: this

That's a very nice diamond.

Some ideas: get a bigger diamond (by lower color or clarity,) or go to something more like D/E VS/SI1 if you like the higher colors. Generally, though, it's a good idea to go for VS/SI clarities; the saying around here goes, "why pay for what you can't see?"

Anything in particular attractive about VVS2?

VVS anything seems here something like an oxymoron. Sort of.

See 5th thread from the bottom.

You are paying too much for the VVS clarity. I am picky about clarity, personally, but my advice is to stay in the VS1-VS2 range. You''ll get a larger diamond while having a very clean diamond. VVS is paying for microscopic differences. I would also recommend WhiteFlash and Good Old Gold because they have a great deal of information on their stones as well as a much better trade-in policy.

This one is $3455 with wire and pricescope discounts:

$2411:

Do you know how much you have just made our day ?!

You know, this has to be one of the most helpful online communities I have ever seen.

And since you asked, I am looking for a 0.6 - 0.75 round diamond. I prefer color over clarity, but would still like to stay in the VS1-VS2 range.

This will be set in a classic solitaire white gold setting. No side diamonds, no wedding band diamonds. So, I really want the diamond to pop.

Wow Ira, nice one! Check out the ASET on that thing! Yum.

Wow. That is nicer than anything I have found so far.

Oh I LOVE that F VS is that in budget? At nearly 6 mm that would be my choice!

OP didn''t give a budget, so I put that in there. Yummy, isn''t it?

I noticed he didn''t give budget. It''s VERY yummy. SUPER yummy, icy white great size and look at the pics and the Idealscope and ... YUM. Great pick NEU!

Ahh, yes. Budget.

I am *trying* to stay under $3000.

Edit: Wow. That one is incredible. A bit too much tho

Aye...ya gotta give it to her (find where I quoted that previously, delusionally, from "A perfect storm," before!).

And, she got the higher end one, later to be excluded by the OP''s constraints.

I did, though, try to find the option showing on the search by cut from Wink, a .71, G VS2 at $3035...but I didn''t see it on his live site, and suppose it''s a current figment...but worth a call from an interested party...

Hey! I SAW this one in person. This diamond is beeaaauuuutiful. Good Luck Alpha G33k. Have fun!

Ok, so the more I tried to learn last night, the more confused I got. So I decided to just go with the recommendations here and have narrowed it down to 2:

This stone set into this setting

OR

This stone set into this setting

Thoughts?

And thanks again to everyone here - I am shocked at how nice this place is.

Either stone or setting would be great. It depends on whether you want the G colour ACA or the GOG I also.

I am so glad you feel at home here, this IS a nice place and because of that, many of us have been here a long time!

I like the GOG set. The diamond is larger and I LOVE the people at GOG. That set would be a real stunner. Great trade up policy too.

There''s something mentally about going to .7 that I like, so I''d probably choose this one as well. And I really like a classic tiffany 4 prong setting.

Thanks for your comments about the friendliness of the forum! Most of us came here when we were shopping and just got hooked! Now we help other people find stones since most of us can''t keep on buying diamonds!!!

"I" too would go for the "I" at GOG

. It is less expensive, bigger (.30mm diameter will be noticable to the eye), and like DS said, I think you future fiance will like having a .70ct sparkler. Also, I think that that color is a great option. I have a J color ideal cut stone, and it looks completely white to my eye and I get many compliments about how big, white, and sparkly it looks... and it is only 0.80ct. In much larger stones, color becaomes more apparent, but it the size you are considering, I think color will be so negligible. Unless you FFI is a diamond nut, I color is a great option!

Yippee, you are getting closer!

And I thought it was just because I am a little obsessive. Your explanation is much better, DS.
