Believe it or not, that is a bad picture of the stones. When I viewed them, I literally yelped. If only I could have bought the pair.

The photo is manipulated though. Instead of the pair, it shows the same stone twice, with the second picture rotated 180o.

Good catch! At least the video shows both stones.

That, I know nothing about. But the stones are so close that you'd have to weigh them to tell the difference.

Is it just me or does $84K for a pair of small blue rocks seem a bit out of touch with reality? I mean they are tourmaline, they are not all that durable, very few people would realize what you are showing off if you were wearing them and you could buy 40,000 bottles of windex and surround yourself with that color if you like the color so much. You think anyone will actually buy them?

Couldn't agree more! Stupid prices that only stupid people would pay! Anybody buying those would need to have more money than sense. :nono:

At least they glow (although the video looks very brightly lit) unlike some "Paraiba" Tourmaline that seriously DO NOT deserve that title!

Don't forget, we're talking about heat treated stones too (not necessarily this pair, but most paraibas are heat treated). I do think the money for these stones has gone off the charts. Tourmaline after all, is not a particularly hard stone, nor does it have a high RI, like a fancy colored diamond. I have to agree with you Michael. I love paraibas, but I can't justify the prices for them and I have seen Brazilian paraibas with fine glow from very expensive dealers in person. I rather have a fine unheated Burmese ruby or a fancy pink diamond, but to each his own. Some people just have to have these stones no matter the cost.

BTW, just found out that they're reproducing this neon color in a synthetic beryl, so buyer beware. At least Adam of PI is an upstanding and respected vendor.

I would totally buy the synthetic if the price is right. but then again i'm just really bitter because i chipped a huge chunk off my favorite tourmaline on a door yesterday.. barely tapped it. I will never spend $$$ on tourmalines again.. they chip so easily!

So can you imagine if you just spent $80K on one and you did that!!

I think that rarity and color should not be the only factors in making a gem valuable, but I do think durability should be part of that mix. For example, sphalerite is a very beautiful and extremely rare gemstone with greater dispersion than diamond. It's absolutely gorgeous and the only gem that I cannot see a discernable tilt window on (I can even see tilt windows on diamonds). However, it's also a relatively inexpensive gem, why??? Well, it's very soft. If there was a paraiba colored spinel, sapphire, or some other hard/durable gem, then maybe I could justify the pricing on these, but I can't on tourmaline, especially heat treated tourmaline (which also weakens the crystal).

If I did, that door would be in pieces right now!

eta: anyone know where i can buy these synthetics? i want one!

Hi All,

I just scrolled down to look at the ruby he has for sale. This is a glass filled ruby cabachon for 520.00. The prices on glass filled rubies are going up as well as the price diffused sapphires. I probably should have put this in the JTV thread. But check out that ruby.

Fair market value is determined by what a seller asks and what the buyer pays. If a buyer has deep enough pockets to add a beautiful gem to his collection, it's his choice. Not all collectors are old enough to have been around when the Paraibas were first found.

As for these gems in particular, don't forget the premium for a matched pair.

Some of us pay tens of dollars, some hundreds and some pay thousands. I think we all buy as our budgets will allow. You can not eat them nor will they keep the rain off. Why do we do it? I think we all have rocks in our heads!

Exactly, CMW. Even if we all had equal budgets, we would still have different preference curves -- one person may buy a gem, another a purse (both non-essentials).

Or if you're me, you buy a gem, a purse, AND a pair of shoes, but you hunt for bargains on all 3 of them.

Oh is this ever true!!! If I had a spare $75,000 or so I would buy a 3 carat D colored VS diamond and wear it as a solitaire instead the diamond I wear as a solitaire now. Even though I only put the ring on once every month or so. Now how crazy is that?
