Hello Everyone,

I had always been a Round stone girl....Transitionals and AVRs are my favorite. One of the reasons I love these is that I do NOT like to see the culet. My eyes are drawn to the darn thing and its all I can look at!

Lately I have been noticing that cushion cuts are nice too...AVC's, Antique cut.....but what I can't tell yet is if the cutlet will bother me. So I'm asking all of you Cushion owners....can you see the culet? Does it bother you?

I'm just not sure which way to go now....thanks for your input! ;))

I have an AVC (several, actually) and can absolutely see the culet in all of them. If an open culet bothers you, an antique stone with a large culet may not be something you can live with. I happen to drooooool over a large open culet and think that aspect of the vintage stone is just dreamy. :love:

I have an antique cushion with a large culet. I can't really see the culet unless I'm holding the stone close to my eyes, but I love it so I want to see it there.

I think you should spend some time wearing a stone with a large culet to decide whether you like it or not. It's not as noticeable in real life as it is in pictures, but it's definitely there.

What size stone are you looking at? The obviousness of the culet will depend on how large it is (cushions can have medium culets or they can have huge culets) but also on the size of the stone. A large culet on a 4 carat will be much more noticeable than on a 50 pointer, for example.

If you're not sure that you'll like it, you may want to pick up an antique cut cz, one with a large culet, and wear it in a stone holder for awhile and see what you think. It's one way to "try before you buy". People are often selling them second hand on DB. The thing about large culets is that people usually love them or hate them, lol.

I don't know why anyone would hate them personally. They're an essential part of certain cuts. That IS what those cuts look like. I love them.

Imdanny......well, I can't say I HATE the culet....hate is a strong word. It seems that when a stone has a culet, my eyes are constantly drawn to center....and its all I can focus on. I want to look down at my diamond and enjoy the bright chunks of light and colors being thrown, I want to enjoy the diamonds entire brilliance....now I know that the culet provides assistance in the way a diamond looks, etc...
BUT.....
I just dont want to be mesmerized by a hole in the center......do you know what I mean? :errrr:

It might be that you are looking at the culet/ diamond magnified a bazillion times as with online photos of diamonds. IRL I don't think they are quite as noticeable unless it's a very large culet on a very large diamond. JMHO :wink2:

::snort:: :bigsmile:

It's funny how many PSers are die hard anti-leakage and yet embrace large culets - leakage in its purest presentation! :devil:

I love giant culets and reflections of culets in antiques - cushions and rounds. I agree they're so much easier to appreciate in larger sizes though!

Yes, bigger is better. :cheeky:

I like to have it as the focal point. It's like the front door of a stately home. I guess I don't care about leakage. My bad! :saint:
