Hi everyone! Long-time lurker and now need professional advice.
I've had my engagement ring for a few weeks now. A little back story...I knew I the setting I wanted: a 1.9 mm pave band with a round center stone, commonprong/shared 4 prong setting. I first chose a very good cut stone with these dimensions: 6.95-6.96x4.12 mm. My ring was being made by a local jeweler who designs all their own rings. My ring size is very small so they had do to a custom setting. In the interim, I was doing hours upon hours of research and decide to upgrade my stone to a beautiful, much better cut round brilliant with these dimensions: 6.84-6.87x4.27 mm. The jeweler said it was just in time as they were about to set the original very good cut stone.
Cut to now...and my diamond is crooked and I can't clean underneath the diamond. I've been trying to scour the internet for how diamonds should normally be set, but I know not being able to clean underneath is a bad thing and certainly it being crooked is going to drive me nuts. Professional jewelers, when you make a mold, are the prong angles and lengths determined exactly by the selected diamond? How much leeway is there to modify the prongs after the ring has been cast? I've seen a certain website that shows just a 1mm difference can greatly affect the setting of the diamond. So my questions are...
1. Why did my jeweler not mention this potential problem?
2. How easy would it be to properly fix the original shared prong setting to bring up the height of the prongs and have the diamond sit perfectly? Do I have to get a new setting altogether?
3. How much space is typically left underneath a diamond in a 4-prong setting? (I requested not too high and not too low as I work in healthcare, but also wanted to showcase the diamond a bit. The thought of cleaning it did not even occur to me at the time. But now I have a super ideal diamond that I don't want clouded by collected gunk!)
Your help is greatly appreciated!
