Now that I am fairly close in buying a diamond engagement ring for my fiancee, is there any way besides having an appraiser look at the diamond, to tell how likely the diamond will chip, crack, or break? Is there a term for this (strain?)?

For example, by looking at the GIA, AGS, or other certs for a VS1 or VS2 diamond, are certian clarity flaws more "bad" than others (not only for looks), but for "reliablity"? Of course I want to buy something that I like, but also want it to perform in the long run. I guess it''s like asking, now that I bought the car that I love, what''s it''s reliability? There''s no 3 year or 36K warranty, hehe.

Or is there really no way to tell how a diamond is going to perform in terms of likelihood of cracking or chipping other than treat it like a baby, or treat it like a "lady".

A good vendor can check it for strain and tell you if its an issue.
Rounds and asschers are much more break resistant than princess cuts.

Breakage is mostly covered by insurance. Once in a great while an insuror will reject some breakage as "inherent vice", but it is an uncommon situation. Strain can create problems, but it isn''t all that common in the first place and few people even look for it. Once the strain is released by a break, no one can detect it was ever present.

Princess cuts with pointy corners cause most of the problems.
